Hino Philippines spotlights series 300 model with 6-speed AT

After launching their upgraded 300 series line-up of light-duty trucks last March, and this reportedly in response to what they observed as a thriving e-commerce sector, Hino Motors Philippines now puts the spotlight on the specific model featuring an automatic transmission. Hino’s series 300 XZU600LA with its 6-speed AT gearbox, optimized engine braking and an expanded clutch lock-up range looks ideal for urban traffic grid punishment … and for attracting new drivers to what appears to be a growing segment.

Press Statement by Hino Motors Philippines Corp., “Drive easy with the new Hino 300 fully automatic truck,” 23 November 2021:

Manila, Philippines, November 2021 – Hino Motors Philippines Corporation (HMP), the exclusive distributor of Hino trucks and buses in the country, treats drivers to easy and enjoyable rides with its new Hino 300 equipped with fully automatic transmission.

Yes, we’re talking about the ever-reliable business partner, the Hino 300.

The Hino 300 series, known for its durability and reliability, has been the preferred partner of starting business owners and established enterprises alike. Now with a fully automatic variant, Hino is poised to fill the gap in the steadily increasing demand for small-lot delivery vehicles.

“The pandemic has prompted great changes in transportation and logistics. As e-commerce continues to grow, so does the need for more small cargo carriers and drivers who can conveniently operate them. Hino’s new light duty truck with a true automatic transmission addresses this concern, offering great ease in operability that even new and less-skilled drivers can drive with much confidence and safety,” said HMP President Mitsuharu Tabata.

Hino’s fully automatic truck, the XZU600LA, comes with an upgraded safety package consisting  of an SRS airbag and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). This makes Hino the first automotive company in the country to offer such features on a light duty truck. With a true automatic transmission, drivers get less fatigued, thereby improving attentiveness on the road. All these add to the overall safety of the driver, vehicle and cargo.

Furthermore, a fully automatic transmission eliminates all hassles on clutch maintenance and repairs. This also helps achieve a more consistent fuel consumption, which is crucial for trucks operating around the clock and drivers having different driving behaviors. A traditional manual transmission’s fuel consumption is greatly influenced by the driver’s skill. A fully automatic transmission, however, makes it easier for business owners to plan and rationalize their operations ahead of time. Overall, a true automatic truck provides real benefits for business owners such as more uptime on operations, lower maintenance costs and consistent fuel consumption, all of which lead to better profits.

The Hino 300 series comes in 11 variants for a wide range of loading capacity from 3,800 to 8,500kg gross vehicle weight. Equipped with a Euro 4-compliant N04C engine, these trucks pack superior power at 136 PS for the XZU302 to 600L and 150 PS for the XZU710 to 730L. On torque, these trucks pull up to 390Nm for the 302 to 600L and up to 420Nm on the 710 to 730L series. That’s higher power and efficiency compared to most light duty trucks in the market to tackle more load at any road condition.

The new Hino 300 series also features upgraded amenities such as USB and Bluetooth-capable entertainment system, built-in 4-piece air conditioning vents in select variants as well as power doors and windows and overhead consoles for added convenience.

“At Hino, we provide only the best for our customers. With this fully automatic truck, we intend to upgrade our drivers’ experience, giving much consideration for their safety and well-being while enabling them to perform their important role in our communities. This results in mutual benefits for all concerned — drivers, operators and their customers. Such is Hino’s Total Support promise — a holistic, reliable and trusted solutions in every aspect of our and our customers’ operations,” shared Tabata.

Stock 4×4 Isuzu D-Max pickups finish strong in multiple categories at PHRX 2021

A pair of D-Max 3.0 4×4 LS-E A/T pickups–one unmodified and the other with minimal tire and suspension tweaks–have reached top roster at the 2021 edition of the Philippine Rally Cross Series.

Press Statement by Isuzu Philippines Corp., “All New Isuzu D-MAX Conquers 2021 Rally Cross Series,” 22 November 2021:

Fresh from seizing the Best Pick Up Award in the 17th Annual C! Awards, the all-new Isuzu D-MAX continues to move into new heights as it conquers the tracks in the 2021 Philippine Rallycross Series (PHRX), Rounds 5 and 6, on November 7 at the open grounds of the Clark Global City, Clark Freeport, Pampanga.

Isuzu Philippines Corporation (IPC) fielded two teams of All-New Isuzu D-MAX 3.0 4×4 LS-E A/T models led by veteran race car driver, Mon Dimapilis, who is also a businessman and Vince Pornelos, a motoring-media.  The D-MAX entry composed of one unmodified D-MAX, similar condition to showroom vehicles, and the other, with changes limited to suspension and tires. It proved to be a beast on the racetrack besting many competitors who regularly compete with purpose-built rally-tuned vehicles and managing to stay within the top 3 winners in 3 different categories.  Praises to its powerful 4JJ3-TCX Blue Power Diesel Engine and superb vehicle design, and of course the driver’s expertise.

Each of the D-MAX was tortured on the circuit during the race and yet survived without damage or need for repair. Both were able to drive home without problem – ready for the next working day and waiting for the next weekend race.  Indeed, the All-New D-MAX once again proved its reliability and durability.

PHRX is a timed racing competition that is held on a close course track, that is basically a dirt circuit.  It started in 2015 and has since accrued the respect and participation of many motorsport experts and enthusiasts.  Among them is Isuzu Philippines Corporation (IPC) who competed in 3 different categories:  Open Class which is open for any engine displacement, UV Class which is for all types of pick-ups, sports and Asian utility vehicles, and AWD Class, for all types of 4-Wheel drive vehicles.

Final leg done, Toyota’s Vios Cup wraps up 2021 season

Toyota Philippines’ one-make race series completes another year despite this one’s extraordinary obstacles.

Press Statement by Toyota Motor Philippines, “TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Vios Cup 2021 season concludes in high gear: Dumlao and Rivera win for the Super Sporting Class, Ang and Garrido take top spots for Sporting Class, Garbes, Lao, and Montero dominate the Promotional Class,” 09 November 2021:

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Vios Cup concluded this year’s season with an action-packed finale weekend.

49 racers gathered at the Clark International Speedway last November 6 to join the third and final leg of Toyota Motor Philippines’ premier motorsports program’s 2021 edition. The race weekend proved to be this season’s climax with thrilling developments and some new names entering the top spots.

“Today marks another milestone for the country’s premier motorsports program. We are at the homestretch — the final leg of this year’s races,” TMP President Atsuhiro Okamoto said during the opening program “We have championed over many obstacles to bring the TGR Vios Cup back. And we couldn’t have done this without all of you. On behalf of Toyota Motor Philippines and all our partners, I would like to thank you for your continued support and participation this season,” he continued.

The final leg comprises 3 Circuit Championship race classes – Super Sporting, Sporting, and Promotional with 6, 7, and 17 racers respectively for each class; and the Autocross Challenge with media, celebrities, and influencers as participants.

The double points ruling for the last two races of the Circuit Championship gave racers the chance to zoom ahead of the previous leg’s winners. The defending winners of the second leg put the pedal to the metal to go on full competition mode to secure the championship title.

Starting the weekend with a competitive stride, Jiro Garbes, Jacob Ang, and Pauland Dumlao are the top podium placers in their respective race classes for Race 7.

Racers pushed the limit of grip, with Team Asiatel – OTR Racing Team racer, Jason Lao grabbing the win for the Promotional Class for Race 8. Meanwhile, Eagle Cement Racing Team racer Jacob Ang dominated the Sporting Class while Pauland Dumlao took the top podium spot again for the Super Sporting Class.

Racers Troy Montero, Joaquin Garrido, and Estefano Rivera took the spotlight in their respective classes for the final race of the season.

The thrill continued in the Autocross Challenge with a higher difficulty level during the final run. Racers had to bring their A game maneuvering through more obstacles compared to the previous legs while tackling a different area of the track.

The match concluded with social media personality Jules Aquino claiming the championship title in the Celebrities and Influencers class, with Arron Villaflor and Lexi Mendiola following as second and third placers, respectively. In the Media class, Jose Altoveros ultimately bested the other racers, followed by Enzo Delos Reyes and Paolo De Borja as the second and third placers.

Game changing Isuzu D-Max named best in class at 17th annual C! Awards

The all-new Isuzu D-Max introduced here last March–the third generation model that we spotted with the trifecta win of improving on its Chevrolet, Ford and Mazda counterparts right off the starting block–has been named Best-in-Class Pickup Truck at the 17th Annual C! Awards.

(See our feature from March 8, “Isuzu Philippines launches next-gen D-Max with DNA that improves on Chevrolet and Ford rivals and upgrades Mazda counterpart,” at https://realworlddrive.wordpress.com/2021/03/08/isuzu-philippines-launches-next-gen-d-max-with-dna-that-improves-on-chevrolet-and-ford-rivals-and-upgrades-mazda-counterpart/.)

Press Statement by Isuzu Philippines Corp., “All New Isuzu D-Max awarded Best-in-Class Pickup Truck in the 17th Annual C! Awards,” 08 November 2021:

The All-New Isuzu D-Max was named Best-in-Class Pickup Truck in C! Magazine’s 17th Annual C! Awards.   The winner was officially announced by the magazine in November via press release. C! Magazine is the country’s oldest premium automotive magazine.  Their annual C! Awards is among the most respected in the industry, having established its reputation on its strict comprehensive review and actual tests.  The jury is composed of the magazine’s editorial staff who are required to experience driving all the vehicles being judged before passing judgement.   “We’re very strict. Even if you’re part of the team, if you don’t have experience, in that particular genre, you can’t vote,” said Kevin Limjoco, President / Founding Editor / Editorial Director of C! Magazine.

Judging entails exhaustive deliberation, considering every aspect and feature of each vehicle such as overall dynamic performance, instrumented performance testing, aesthetics/design, packaging/standard equipment, comforts/luxuries, safety, efficiency, audio/infotainment quality, length of factory warranties, extent of supported aftersales maintenance, pride-of-ownership, value-for-money, resale values and more.

Hailed the runaway winner, the All-New Isuzu D-Max stands out with its network of safety features that operate automatically and independently. Its new Advanced Driver Assist System or ADAS comes with a first in its class SMART DUO CAM, which constantly maps the surrounding area to measure distance of every obstacle on the road. Since it uses a dual camera set-up, it can detect 3D objects just like how human eyes recognizes depth of field.

Because of this, the D-MAX now has multiple active safety features like pre-crash safety, speed assist, lane support and headlamp control. ADAS also offers an 8-eye Parking Aid with reverse camera, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.

With these remarkable improvements, the All-New D-Max received a perfect 5-star rating from an international testing body, ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).

Designed to ultimately provide with better driving experience, the All-New Isuzu D-MAX promises DURABILITY, POWER, PERFORMANCE, INNOVATION and SAFETY FEATURES that can bring INTO NEW HEIGHTS.

Kevin Limjoco, who is also the head juror, shared how the jury was impressed by the D-Max during an interview, “On its own, not only is the D-Max at its very best, the   D-Max has never been as good as it is, until this model.  It’s spectacular.  Now when you compare it to its competition, that’s where it really started to present all its benefits – that it is the most comfortable, the interior, similar to whatever is in the mu-X, it has the most sophisticated, the most elegant interior.  All the little adjustments to the suspension, the increase of the brakes, all the different performance upgrades were very significant.  It’s a balance of all these things all put together.”  Limjoco went on to praise D-Max for not just being a looker, but also for performing extremely well. “There are vehicles in the market that look great but don’t perform well.  With the D-Max, it does it all.  It actually is. You know that it has the Isuzu reliability, you know that it has the strength, all the users are looking for.  The D-Max on road is quicker.  If you look carefully at the acceleration run and speed, on road performance of the D-Max, is actually superior.  Its quicker, it handles better.  When you put all the reasons together, it was a slam-dunk for the D-Max,” said Limjoco.

In an official statement, Isuzu Philippines Corporation President, Hajime Koso states, “Thank you to C! Magazine and to all the judges.  IPC is honored to receive this award and we share this honor with our dealers and with our valued customers.  The D-Max is a symbol of our vision for sustainable development as it has undergone continuous innovations to help protect and save the environment for future generations, without compromising its looks, comfort and performance.  We stay true to our commitment, “Your responsible partner.” That is why at IPC we strive to be the vital engine for Philippine society on the road to progress and towards a sustainable automotive chain.”

Background of the Application for the Asia Digital Transformation (ADX) Projects

Broadleaf has made Digital Transformation (DX) the main theme of its medium-term management plans from 2021 to 2023. It has also positioned the development of a MaaS (Mobility as a Service) platform as one of their strategic priorities※2 for this period. Broadleaf believes that a MaaS platform has the potential to increase the convenience of everyday life, mitigate the mobility gap, and reduce the environmental impact of transportation for people in the Philippines and other ASEAN countries.

In addition, Broadleaf participated in a new public transportation model project*3 in the City of Pasay, in the National Capital Region of the Philippines, which was launched in December 2020. As Broadleaf has already developed the basic system functions and established a framework for implementing the project, while also having experience in collaborating with local companies in the Philippines, it felt that the model project met the objectives of the Asia Digital Transformation (ADX) Projects, which led to the decision to submit a proposal for the program.

Objective of the Pilot Project

The Philippines is facing major challenges such as chronic traffic congestion and environmental pollution due to its rapid urbanization and increasing population density. While the government is promoting the electrification of public transportation services as part of its environmental measures, there is an urgent need to improve the profitability of the services in order to accelerate the introduction of expensive electric vehicles. With the adoption of its pilot project for the Asia Digital Transformation (ADX) Projects, Broadleaf aims to utilize the knowledge it has gained so far to establish a new regional model for transportation in the Philippines through a public-private partnership with METI, AMEICC, and JETRO.

Details of the Pilot Project

The pilot project, which will be conducted in the Philippines in collaboration with a local partner company, Angat Pilipinas Transport Cooperative (hereinafter “APTC”), will consist of the following:

Model Diagram of the Pilot
  1. Provision of an electronic payment system for cashless transportation fare payments and boarding reservations.
  2. Provision of an operational management system for visualizing vehicle locations, managing vehicle dispatch schedules, etc.
  3. Introduction of a MaaS platform that integrates the Big Data analysis infrastructure collected from these systems.

The local partner company, APTC, is a transportation business cooperative operated by the National Council for Solo Parents (hereinafter “NCSP”), a large NPO that supports single-parent households throughout the Philippines, has the following three objectives for the project:

  1. To use the profits from its transportation business to fund activities aimed at supporting single-parent households.
  2. To create work opportunities for single-parent households.
  3. To achieve decarbonization by adopting environmentally friendly electric vehicles.

Broadleaf strongly agrees with the activities of the NCSP and APTC, including their support for single-parent households and conducting business in an environmentally friendly manner.

Through this pilot project, Broadleaf aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and traffic congestion by increasing the implementation of electric tricycles. The high versatility of the cloud-based MaaS platform developed and provided by Broadleaf allows the platform to be applied not only to electric tricycles, but to all mobility services, including those using four-wheeled and two-wheeled vehicles. Broadleaf believes that the platform will help to establish a new regional model for transportation. Furthermore, through its collaboration with APTC, Broadleaf will contribute to solving various social issues that the Philippines is facing, such as creating employment for single-parent households, while also contributing to the achievement of SDGs.

About the Asia Digital Transformation (ADX) Projects

The objective of this initiative is to solve economic and social issues in the ASEAN region and to promote the social implementation of digital innovation as a joint ASEAN-Japan effort through the support of pilot projects utilizing digital technology conducted as collaborations between Japanese and local companies.

About the Angat Pilipinas Transport Cooperative (APTC)

APTC is a transportation business cooperative operated by NCSP, a large NPO that supports single-parent households throughout the Philippines. It offers an exclusive premium service for single-parent households and also provides discounted services to NCSP members.

Additionally, by adopting electric vehicles eligible for the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization (PUVM) Program, a program being promoted by the Department of Transportation of the Philippines, and using a platform that integrates tricycle operation modes, secondary transportation modes and jeepneys, all of which are used to provide last-mile service, which are routes from major stations to shopping districts and other destinations, this platform enables vehicle dispatch, payment, and operation management. Both modes use environmentally friendly electric vehicles. Finally, the drivers will be provided with generous employment benefits in addition to their regular compensation as a social program.

  1. Aftermarket refers to the market for all goods and services consumed after the purchase of a vehicle, primarily refueling, accessories, inspections, maintenance, part replacement, resale, disposal, etc.

EVAP eco-run to demonstrate EV commuting in the metro

The metro’s major roads will be teeming with silent electric vehicles if all goes to plan with the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines’ (EVAP’s) EV eco-run tomorrow, Saturday,  November 6. The event will serve as proof-of-concept for EV commuting and will highlight EVAP’s participation at the ongoing United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26).

Press Statement of Electric Vehicles Association of the Philippines, “EVAP Mounts the First Eco-Run for EVs in PH: ‘Accelerating the Switch to EV Charging’ is set to further push the use of EVs in the country,” 03 November 2021:

Manila, PhilippinesA number of electric vehicles will be showcased along a couple of major thoroughfares in Metro Manila this weekend. The Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) is organizing the first EV eco-run, ‘Accelerating the Switch to EV Charging,’ on Saturday, November 6, 2021.

The on-ground event will be mounted with the support of the association’s sub-group, EV Owners Society (EVOS), a startup community of EV owners in the country that was established in January 2021.

‘Accelerating the Switch to EV Charging’ will gather registered participants—EV owners in Metro Manila and nearby areas—for a driving tour that is aimed to demonstrate support to a proposed legislation (now lodged in the bicameral conference committee) promoting the use of EVs in the country.

The activity is also in line with the ongoing 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), wherein EVAP and the country are participating in. COP26—which commenced on October 31 to last until November 12 in Glasgow, Scotland—gathers parties from across the globe to “accelerate action towards the goals” of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement, a legally binding international treaty on climate change.

“EVAP is unrelentingly spearheading the push towards the use of EVs so the country could do its part in the rising international drive towards a greener planet,” said EVAP President Edmund Araga. “In our little way, we aim to stage a show of force to gain the backing of our honorable legislators so we could earn a major milestone in our proposed switch to air pollution-free and energy-efficient EVs.”

Participants to the upcoming one-day eco-run will drive along assigned routes to complete required activities. There will be two loops that they can take—North Loop (40kph speed) running from Land Rover site in San Juan City going to UNIOIL EDSA Guadalupe station DOE Ave; South Loop (15kph speed) starting from Nissan Pasong Tamo Extension in Makati City site going to BYD (southwest corner Buendia/Dian St) Nissan Otis, and ending in UNIOIL Guadalupe station-DOE Avenue.

There are checkpoints assigned per station where participants are required to submit activity passports containing information from the registration form and a list of EV charging stations. Those shall be stamped or signed by marshalls per station. Participants are also required to have their photos taken while holding plaque cards and picking a prize.

The eco-run is set to begin at any of the loops at 8 a.m. The time starts when a participant enters a station. All stations in a loop shall be completed along with the designated stamps/signatures in the activity passport (ideally 3 minutes per station for the physical activities). All participants meet up at Ford BGC at 10 a.m. for awarding and snacks.
