As a step towards the brand’s declared global goal of of zero traffic collision fatalities by 2050, Honda’s Philippines has given 24 students from 8 AIESEC-member schools classroom and practical driving instruction at their Honda Safety Driving in Paranaque City. Lessons were reinforced with guided drives on Honda SENSING-equipped models such as their CIvic sedan and their HR-V and BR-V SUVs.
Press Statement by Honda Cars Philippines, Inc., “Honda Cars continues with road safety program for the youth,” 17 March 2023:
Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) sustains efforts to contribute to better road safety, most recently through another round of interactive learning sessions for college students, still in partnership with the international organization of student youth leaders, AIESEC in the Philippines (AIESEC). On March 11, 2023, there were 24 students from eight (8) member schools of AIESEC who participated in HCPI’s training program where classroom instruction on safe driving behavior was reinforced with a guided experiential drive of Honda SENSING–equipped models such as the All-New BR-V, Civic and HR-V.
Inspired by Honda’s global target of zero traffic collision fatalities by 2050, HCPI organizes educational programs on road safety for its different stakeholders such as the youth to strengthen their consciousness and appreciation for road safety. The demonstration of Honda SENSING through an experiential drive proved effective in understanding how technology is applied in protecting the safety of the driver, passengers, as well as pedestrians, and other road users. Honda has been reinforcing its vehicles with the Honda SENSING suite of safety features to realize the dream of “Safety for Everyone.”
The learning sessions covered the correct mindset towards driving, facilitated by professional instructors from the Honda Safety Driving Center. Pre-drive inspection, traffic rules and regulations, and common misconceptions about driving were also discussed. During the Honda SENSING actual driving exercises, the students were guided by HCPI’s technical experts and certified driving instructors. The participants were highly engaged as they got a first-hand experience with Honda’s advanced driver-assist system using vehicles equipped with Honda SENSING, such as the Civic, All-New HR-V, and All-New BR-V 1.5 VX CVT.
HCPI President, Mr. Masahiko Nakamura expressed his appreciation for the students who are youth leaders in their respective colleges and universities. “It is my pleasure to be with you who are very passionate about creating good change for society. This program is designed to strengthen our consciousness about how our own actions can help reduce road accidents, and how we can influence other road users to also improve their driving habits. When you apply what you learn, and share them in your schools, with your active support, we can create more meaningful change and impact more people.”
The participants, with their President Mr. Sajana Vithanawasam, also expressed their gratitude to Honda “AIESEC in the Philippines is sincerely honored to partner with Honda in this road safety program. We appreciate Honda’s efforts on sustainability and this initiative to help us become better road users.”
HCPI has been conducting educational campaigns on road safety for the youth since 2004 through its program, Teen Smart. The purpose then remains relevant today – to develop the youth’s consciousness of road safety and strengthen the sense of responsibility in reducing road accidents as pedestrians and future drivers. HCPI has engaged with different partners from the government and civil society to reach more youth who are among the most vulnerable in road accidents. Even during the pandemic, HCPI has continued with this effort online.

Formally launched by Honda Cars Philippines last Monday, November 21, the second-generation BR-V sub-compact crossover SUV now has the underpinnings of a larger and more globally-attuned platform, it features the same engine as that of the nominally higher notched HR-V, and it brings back the manual transmission option that was briefly offered on the previous model. The new BR-V:
leaves behind its Brio/Mobilio origins and is now upsized to the platform of the newest City model, the same one on which the recently upgraded HR-V is based;
replaces the previous generation’s L15Z1 1.5 liter i-VTEC engine with the L15ZF Earth Dreams i-VTEC, the same one used by the naturally aspirated base variant of the new HR-V;
and expands the model line up downwards with a more utilitarian base variant and upwards with a Honda Sensing-equipped top spec variant, making its price-points overlap those of the HR-V.
The previous generation BR-V had been assembled at Honda Cars Philippines’ plant in Santa Rosa, Laguna, along with their popular City sub-compact sedan. But this new generation model is now being brought in from Indonesia, the same country of origin as that of its Japanese-brand 1.5 liter-powered rivals the Mitsubishi Xpander (both the MPV and Cross crossover models) and the Toyota Rush, as well as the recently launched Stargazer MPV of the South Korean Hyundai marque.
At the launch event, Honda Cars Philippines sales division general manager Atty. Louie Soriano said that they intend to have the BR-V eventually contribute 50 percent of total sales volume, adding that the 800 to 900 units per month this entails ought to be reachable given how they opened the small crossover SUV segment with the hugely popular first-gen CR-V in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.
Can they reach this 50 percent sales volume target? We think yes, it’s feasible, and this could conceivably lead to the BR-V again being assembled locally. Because, by the looks of it, by how the new BR-V has been designed by regional Honda engineers Eknat Ajjanakulchai and Suthai Chokngamvong, and how it’s configured into four diverse variants by Honda Philippines’ product planning team, this upsized and now full-fledged small crossover SUV could very well follow in the footsteps of their pioneering small SUV–the original and classic CR-V.
Larger mainstream platform
Originally evolved from Honda’s Mobilio sub-compact MPV which, in turn, was based on the Brio micro-hatchback, this new BR-V is now built on the City platform which was also the basis for the third-generation HR-V that was launched here last April. The BR-V is now fully grown, so to speak, with all dimensions being upsized from that first generation model that charmingly pushed the envelope of the diminutive yet spirited Brio that they asserted to be small but still, at its heart, a Honda.

More significantly, the upsized platform implies an upscaled market for the BR-V as well. The Brio platform and the first generation Mobilio and BR-V models it had spawned were all intended for emerging markets. This distinguishes the BR-V from Honda’s mainstream international-market models such as the Civic and CR-V, and explains why it was originally notched under the smaller HR-V. But with this upgrade to a larger City-based platform, the new BR-V appears poised to meet global market expectations without disclaimers about build quality and passenger size-limits.
This newest generation BR-V now features refinements that have been typical on global models–details such as:
second row seats that can be tumbled out of the way with a single lever-pull, allowing for fast, no-fuss access to the third row;
generous overall legroom that they’ve decisively and prudently balanced between the seating rows, the wealth of space allowing for sliding adjustment only to the front seats and for fixed second and third row positions (like on mid-size body-on-frame SUVs) that accommodate predictable passenger mixes;
and, finally, the same sort of fold-flat stowable seats we’ve come to expect from Honda wagons and hatchbacks that let you transform the cabin’s rear into a car-camping cavern.
With its new styling, particularly its redesigned fascia, the BR-V looks like an upsized HR-V, a lengthened wheelbase and cabin making it possible to turn the latter two-row model’s generous luggage space into a multi-purpose seats-or-cargo third row. And, showing how powertrains, passenger box designs and materials engineering have advanced during the intervening decades, the new BR-V offers people-moving and/or cargo-hauling capacities equivalent to that of the still slightly larger and heavier first-generation CR-V from the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. And, perhaps not coincidentally, this BR-V iteration now features cabin and window lines similar to that of the even larger, latest generation CR-V.
While the Honda’s Earth Dreams trademark hasn’t gained much traction here, and only as a tag for their latest-generation CVT gearboxes, the technology set it describes includes advanced eco-friendly and efficient-burning valvetrains. On the previous generation BR-V, its Earth Dreams gearbox was not mated to an Earth Dreams valvetrained engine but rather to the L15Z1 i-VTEC 1.5 liter SOHC engine also used by their Mobilio MPV. This time around, the City-based BR-V has an Earth Dreams CVT gearbox option matched with the L15ZF Earth Dreams i-VTEC 1.5 liter DOHC engine that also powers their newest City sedan and hatchback, and the S CVT naturally aspirated variant of the new HR-V.
About the L15ZF’s DOHC-driven valvetrain, those double overhead camshafts are thought to bring higher power and torque numbers with cleaner burns, yes, but racing enthusiasts have long asserted that SOHC-equipped engines have better punch with faster peaking torque because of the lighter valvetrain mass. Interestingly though, the L15ZF’s power and torque numbers appear better all around, with peak power of 121ps or 119hp occurring at 6600rpm and peak torque of 145Nm attained at 4300rpm. Compare these with 120ps or 118hp at 6600rpm and 145Nm at 4600rpm for the old L15Z1 with SOHC valvetrain and its clear that Honda has found a way to make a newer DOHC engine deliver slightly more power with torque that peaks faster at 300 less rpm’s.

In any case, Honda’s intent for complete Earth Dreams powertrains burned through the static with the new BR-V after a 2022 fuel-economy measuring run officiated by the Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP) recorded their 1.5 V CVT variant as delivering an impressive 24.71 kilometers per liter.
Priced deeper, notched higher
The new BR-V’s 1.5 S MT (manual transmission) variant’s PhP1.090M list price, while being PhP40,000 higher than that of the previous generation’s PhP1.050M 1.5 S CVT base variant, could actually be perceived as being of higher value by countryside customers. Honda Philippines’ Atty. Soriano observed that rural motorists appear to prefer manual transmissions over advanced CVT gearboxes–we think this is because stickshift gearboxes make them less dependent on Honda dealers for upkeep and major repairs. The BR-V’s new 6-speed manual option means being free from dealership-umbilicals and having the option of recruiting a neighborhood mechanic to do the fixing–a welcome freedom when living far from city grids and authorized service networks.
And this expansion downward is matched upward with a new top-spec variant completing a price spread that reveals how the new BR-V may now be notched higher than before in Honda’s model mix.

With prices ranging from PhP1.090M for the 1.5 S MT manual gearbox base variant up to PhP1.390M for the top spec variant that gives the model Honda Sensing driver assist telematics for the first time, the BR-V’s price-points now overlap those of the HR-V. But, considering that its prices only bump against the price of the identically powered and naturally aspirated variant of the HR-V, the BR-V’s price-points now seem to be at parity with–if not notched higher than–the HR-V’s.
The PhP1.090M BR-V S MT and PhP 1.150M S CVT are priced below the PhP1.250M HR-V S CVT but the variance could be attributed to all HR-V variants–even the naturally aspirated base variant–having the advanced Honda Sensing telematics suite. The PhP1.295M BR-V 1.5 V CVT, on the other hand, is priced PhP45,000 higher than the HR-V S CVT despite not being Honda Sensing-equipped. And the PhP1.390M BR-V VX CVT that has Honda Sensing is priced a whopping PhP140,000 higher than the similarly equipped HR-V S CVT. Drill down to the details of common or differing powerplants and premium Honda Sensing telematics options, it becomes apparent that, yes, definitely, apples-to-apples, the new BR-V is notched the same if not slightly higher than the similarly powered and naturally aspirated base variant of the HR-V. That’s a big move by the bigger new BR-V.

With pump prices having risen by two-figure up-ticks so far, Honda Cars Philippines offers sensible tips to fall back on for motoring in general and for driving their pioneering Earth Dreams CVT equipped models, in particular–their BR-V three row SUV, City urban commuter models, and Brio sub-compact hatchback all score impressive km/l ratings in the 20’s.
Press Statement by Honda Cars Philippines, Inc., “Save gas and money with fuel-efficient Honda vehicles,” 18 May 2022:
Honda has expressed its environmental goal of carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities by 2050. This encompasses the target for automobiles which is 100% electrification by 2040. On the way there, we will not relent on improving vehicle fuel efficiency, which is both practical and necessary in view of its impacts on health and global warming, and on consumption and spending.
In line with the global mission of preserving the environment, Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. has been offering a range of fuel-efficient models to choose from. Though it is worth noting that the fuel consumption would vary depending on how the owner uses and takes care of his/her vehicle. Lately, fuel prices in the Philippines have been skyrocketing, and this has indeed become a major frustration among motorists. That said, here are our top tips on how you can save on fuel and get the best out of your drive:
Follow the prescribed maintenance schedule for your vehicle. Keeping your car in shape will help ensure good performance in the long run. Without a good tune-up, a vehicle consumes more fuel and is more prone to breakdowns. Give attention to air filters, as well as suspension and chassis parts. Check your owner’s manual or warranty booklet for the recommended maintenance schedule. Honda customers can visit www.hondaphil.com Virtual Showroom/After Sales for a detailed guide on the preventive maintenance and parts replacement schedule, and cost estimate for all models. Further, Honda prescribes only two maintenance visits a year at authorized Honda dealers compared with the quarterly maintenance of other brands. Learn more about Honda’s periodic maintenance in this video Truth About Honda PMS (Periodic Maintenance Service) – YouTube
Get a fuel-efficient vehicle. This is definitely an important decision and so it will help to do research. Consider Honda, the technology behind the design and development of Honda vehicles speak of dynamic performance and reliability, combined with lower emissions because every drop of fuel is optimized. Honda is also among the first brands to equip its vehicles with a visual fuel-efficiency feedback mechanism, the Eco-assist system and Econ button, to promote fuel-efficient driving as a fun and rewarding experience.
Honda continues to improve its vehicles’ fuel economy in different driving conditions, whether in city trips with frequent stopping and starting, or in highway driving. Here are examples of fuel mileage derived from fuel economy runs organized by Honda Cars Philippines in partnership with the Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP):
Honda BR-V – with its 1.5 i-VTEC engine that produces 120ps, the BR-V attained a fuel economy of 22.58 km/L. This puts the affordable subcompact 7-seater SUV at the top of its class in horsepower rating with notable fuel efficiency.
Honda City – equipped with 1.5-liter DOHC i-VTEC engine, the City achieved a fuel mileage of 25.17 km/L. The variable valve timing and electronic lift control technology optimize engine response giving it power and fuel efficiency at the same time.
Honda Brio – powered by a 1.2-liter SOHC i-VTEC engine with CVT, the Brio showed an economy rating of 24.39 km/L. The subcompact hatchback exhibits power that also delivers great gas mileage and ample space, and breaks the norms of typical small cars.
The fuel economy runs were conducted with the AAP’s supervision, parameters include cruising speed of 60-80 kph at 1500-2000 rpm, and aircon setting of 24°C and blower fan speed of 1.
Plan and combine trips. When safe, car-pooling is quite the option to reduce trips and fuel consumption. Plan your drive, avoid getting caught in rush-hour traffic, or use navigation apps to know the best route for your destination and escape congested areas.
Drive smoothly, not aggressively. Smooth driving is safer for everyone on the road. On the other hand, sudden acceleration and hard braking both increase fuel consumption and emissions. Aggressive driving (speeding and rapid acceleration/braking), aside from being unsafe, may lower gas mileage by 15%–30% at highway speeds and 10%–40% in stop-and-go traffic.
Minimize idling. You make the most of your fuel when you are in motion. On the other hand, staying idle for long means you’re burning fuel without going anywhere. Therefore, avoid idling, avoid traffic as much as you can, and drive your vehicle to warm it up.
Get rid of all extra weight. Remember, the more weight a car needs to pull, the more effort the engine needs, and the more fuel it consumes. It is estimated that for every additional load of 100 pounds, your car’s fuel mileage decreases by 2%, and more when you’re driving up inclines. Remove unnecessary stuff you might be carrying in your car.
Keep your tires properly inflated. Underinflated tires mean more rolling resistance and more work for your engine. Studies show a 1% decrease in tire pressure can lead to a 0.3% reduction in fuel economy and a shorter lifespan for your tires. And so, a good quality tire pressure gauge can come handy. Check your tires every two weeks to make sure you are within the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle’s load.

Honda Cars Philippines launched their third generation HR-V this week and just a year after its global launch in Japan in April 2021. With this newest generation, Honda appears to have gone back to the drawing board, making more sense of that sub-compact crossover SUV form, giving their High-riding Revolutionary Vehicle some gorgeous big car contours backstopped by a genuinely roomy cabin box.
The new HR-V has two engine options, the first time there’s been a choice for HR-V buyers here. The base HR-V S CVT variant has a 1.5L i-VTEC L15ZF delivering peak figures of 118hp @ 6600rpm and 145Nm @ 4600rpm. While the top-spec’d HR-V V CVT variant has the 1.5L VTEC turbo L15B7 punching out 174hp @ 6000rpm and 240Nm @ 1700~4500rpm. And, with their CSR-fuelled push for reducing vehicle accidents, Honda now offers all HR-V variants with factory standard Honda Sensing driver-assistance technology.
In light of those new engine options and the next-generation telematics upgrade, the change in prices from the HR-V’s previous generation is surprisingly restrained. The base 1.5L S CVT variant lists at P1.250m which is P0.046m lower than its predecessor’s P1.296m, and the top-of-the-line 1.5L turbo V CVT lists at P1.598m, just P0.083m more than the previous top-spec price of P1.515m.
Larger than life
A long muscled hood, the roofline no longer tear-dropped but straighter going back, and lower headroom with wider, squinty glass, all make the new HR-V look like a faithfully scaled down mid-size SUV. Inside, that external shape translates into sprawling real estate, with leg room in front and back that can’t be made cramped even if you tried.
3rd generation HR-V 1.5L S CVT variant
The SUV’s sleek silhouette does mean less than ideal headroom in the rear (though it’s still good enough for medium-sized adults) but the multi-purpose fold-flat rear-row does assert that space’s lean towards utility after all. It doesn’t lean too much that way, though, not with a novel rear A/C vent now standard on the HR-V
3rd generation HR-V 1.5L Turbo V CVT variant
The HR-V looks larger while now having a 1.5L naturally aspirated base variant engine after the previous generation’s 1.8L R18Z9. Naturally, particularly under the spotlights of the HR-V’s formal launch, its apparent size and downsized engine begged the question, does the new HR-V S variant have enough horses under the hood?
“S” for sweet spot
Well, considering that its 1.5L i-VTEC L15Z paired with their current generation Earth Dreams Technology CVT gearbox is the same powertrain combo under the hood of their 7-seat BR-V crossover SUV, I’d say, yes sir, three bags full, sir.
Think of it: (1) a best in class 1.5 liter SOHC torque factory with a VTEC valvetrain’s two-stage power curve; (2) a Honda-rugged CVT gearbox, its pulley ratio finely balanced with the fluid ratios of a torque converter that delivers relentless uphill pull; (3) this engine-gearbox windfall having been mounted and field-proven on their bestseller 7-seat crossover SUV; and (4) all these now, suddenly, unleashed under the 2-row, 5-seat, and lighter loaded HR-V. Enough power by a good margin, I’d say.
The engine downsizing may have been forced on them because of the discontinuation of the former generation’s 1.8L R18Z9, but just like the 1.3L turning into a wiser-choice 1.2L for the 2nd-gen Brio, the HR-V’s new 1.5L seems to have landed on a sweet spot with that “S” standing for “serendipity” as well.
Unburdened sporters
But I do get how that turbocharged V variant might goad folks into considering just the top of the ticket and treating the S variant as an entry-level outlier. Matter of fact, even Honda Philippines is estimating that a 55 percent majority of unit sales will be in V variants.
Are we looking at a moon watch / moon swatch scenario, the new HR-V lineup being like having a V-variant Omega turbo sporter with an S-variant Swatch homage economy-model? True, with a chunky P348k price delta between the P1.250m 1.5L S CVT and the P1.598m 1.5L V Turbo CVT, the variants could just as easily be compared to other Honda models rather than each other. And maybe that’s the point after all.
It’s like they gamed some “what-ifs” into their product mix. What if, with the S variant, we make the 1.5 liter, one quarter ton crossover SUV more sporty by losing that third seating row of popular, reliable but relatively staid and hefty 7-seaters such as the Mitsubishi Xpander, Toyota Rush, Suzuki XL7, and even the bestselling Honda BR-V? That would put the S variant’s P1.250m sticker price in a distinctly premium light, wouldn’t it?
Other hand, about the V variant, what if we took the Civic’s L15B7 1.5L turbocharged VTEC with its mainstay Earth Dreams CVT gearbox and put these into, hey look, how about the new HR-V? From a compact sport sedan that weighs in closer to a ton and a half, to a ton and a quarter sub-compact crossover SUV, the multiverse potential of transplanting that 174hp / 220Nm turbo must’ve been irresistible. Suddenly that extra P0.100m for a P1.598m HR-V V-variant versus the Civic V Turbo’s P1.498m sticker price isn’t off-putting at all. Shell out an extra P100k for the Civic’s high-riding pocket-rocket Loki brother anyone? That 55 percent projected sales share sounds just right.
Honda Cars Philippines, AXA Philippines and BPI MS Insurance have organized preferential comprehensive insurance rates for vehicles with Honda Sensing driver assistance telematics. Honda Sensing is currently featured on Honda’s Civic and Accord sedans as well as their CR-V 7-seat crossover SUV. And, with the Honda, AXA and BPI partnership running until December 31, 2022, their Honda Sensing Insurance Partnership Program will eventually cover other models on which Honda Sensing will be launched this year.
Press Statement by Honda Cars Philippines, Inc., “Best value car insurance in the Honda SENSING Insurance Partnership: Preferred rates for motor vehicle insurance and a higher level of safety in Honda models equipped with Honda SENSING,” 18 February 2022:
Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI), with AXA Philippines and BPI MS Insurance, announced the Honda SENSING Insurance Partnership Program which offers preferential rates for comprehensive insurance to customers who will purchase Honda models equipped with the Honda SENSING such as the All-New Civic, CR-V, and Accord. The year-long partnership is up to December 31, 2022, and will include other models with Honda SENSING that HCPI will launch within the program timeframe.
Honda has always strongly advocated road safety and HCPI is among the first car brands in the Philippines to offer a suite of driver-assist safety features which we now know as Honda SENSING. This is in line with Honda’s mission to provide safe and reliable vehicles to realize zero traffic collision fatalities, in which not only automobile occupants, but everyone, including pedestrians and other road users, may share the road safely and with peace of mind.
Analysis of road accidents revealed that many fatal mishaps are caused by vehicles straying from their lanes. Motivated to create a solution, Honda developed the “Honda SENSING”, a driver-assist system that operates to detect and take action to avoid situations such as one-car accidents, collisions, pedestrian injuries, and missed road signs.
The recent launch of the 11th generation All-New Civic highlights the latest version of the Honda SENSING given the usage of a monocular camerathat has better recognition and can measure the distance target of the vehicle or obstacles ahead. This gives the compact sedan access to the following high-tech safety features:
Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) – The system now recognizes pedestrians during day and night, bicycles, left / right turn across the path, and preceding motorcycles.
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow (LSF)
Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)
Road Departure Mitigation System with Lane Departure Warning (RDM with LDW)
Auto High-Beam (AHB)
Lead Car Departure Notification System (LCDN) – New; exclusive on the All-New Civic
Perfectly complementing the Honda SENSING, for over 10 years, Honda sustains its excellent results and safety ratings in the ASEAN NCAP (New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asia). Hailed as the Best Road Safety Partner in January 2022 during the 10th-anniversary celebration of ASEAN NCAP, this affirms Honda’s commitment to safety for its customers and everyone who shares the road.
Customers may avail of the preferential rates from AXA Philippines and BPI MS Insurance for the following Honda SENSING models:

CR-V
S Diesel 9AT SX Diesel 9AT

“We would like to thank our insurance partners, AXA Philippines and BPI MS Insurance, for being one with Honda in aiming to improve road safety through this partnership and the Honda SENSING technology. We wish to continue providing our customers with safe and reliable vehicles to become the “power” that supports people’s lives. We also encourage everyone in the mission to improve road safety through responsible vehicle ownership and use.” said Mr. Masahiko Nakamura, President of Honda Cars Philippines, Inc.
