Mitsubishi launches face-lifted Xpander with test drive fest

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines has introduced their face-lifted Xpander MPV with the “Reimagine your ride: The Mitsubishi test drive” event held at Block 16 of the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds this month. The Philippines is the second largest Asian market for the Xpander which was first introduced globally in 2017 from Indonesia where the model quickly became the second-best selling MPV next to the Toyota Avanza in 2018. List prices for the new Xpander start at PHP1.030M.

Press Statement by Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp., “New Xpander formally unveiled and now at all Mitsubishi motors dealerships nationwide,” 19 May 2022:

May 19, 2022, Pasay City–Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) today formally unveiled the much-anticipated New Xpander. This latest iteration of the brand’s best-selling model redefines the MPV segment sporting a more advanced and progressive look while combining luxury and comfort akin to larger SUVs.

“We are excited for Filipinos to finally be able to see in metal the New Xpander. Mitsubishi Motors wanted to further evolve the Xpander and assert its number 1 position in the market. We have enhanced its unique selling propositions while upholding the traits that have made it the MPV that it is today. Expect a reimagined ride that will tap into your adventurous spirit and re-excite you to hit the road and go outdoors,” said Mr. Takeshi Hara, MMPC’s President and CEO.

Design

Developed to exude more “active” and “tough” characteristics. Starting with the exterior, the front embraces a more horizontal structure with the addition of 3-dimensional skid guards. Evident are the new black metallic radiator grille and the now signature T-shape headlight with a restyled LED daytime running lights (DRL) and turn signal.

The back also shows off an upgraded appearance with the adoption of a homogeneous T-shape taillight unto the reshaped bumper as well as tailgate garnish and glass. On the sides, noticeable are the bigger 17-inch wheels and larger side sill garnish.

Stepping inside, Mitsubishi’s Design Identity of “Horizontal Axis” was applied to the dashboard for a more robust feel. This is complemented by accents of soft padded materials with real stitches. At the driver’s seat, the tilt and telescopic steering wheel, aside from its now more modern styling, has been restructured with a compact center to enable a better grip. Behind it, a new meter cluster and dynamic opening graphic have been incorporated.

Comfort and Peace of Mind

Hard to miss is the patented 7-inch Smartphone-link Display Audio (SDA-3). A touchscreen infotainment system that supports hands-free functions and is compatible to both Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto. At the bottom of it is a new digital LCD A/C panel that was made not only to match the overall aesthetic but also to be easy-to-understand. For improved convenience, the front console has been converted into a larger capacity open tray while still having a 12V outlet and USB port

Down the center is the new floor console with arm rests that can hold a tissue pack on the back of its lid and four 600 ml-sized bottles in the main space. The layout of the console cup holders have been reoriented sideways and now with a larger circumference. All these to offer better organization and maximization of space.

In the second row, it can be seen that the two rear USB ports now have 1 TYPE-A and 1 TYPE-C embedded on the back of the console. The rear A/C dial and louver now also have more inviting colors and cup holders have been placed unto the seat armrest. All these form part of the improvements to overall ergonomics. Customer favorites such as the easy-folding seat mechanisms, front row and luggage under trays, multi-function seat-back pockets and third row power outlets can still be found.

With all seats up, this 7-seater has more than enough room for full-size adults plus luggage. Configured to have more hip-width and ample room from the head to toe while being able to fit four 4-gallon water bottles or a stroller directly behind the last row. Whereas when folded, a flat cargo deck with no sticking up bits or gaps can be utilized. Versatility at its finest, making it easier to transport bikes, potted plants or even furniture as needed.

Still the only one in the category equipped with Cruise Control, that aid in reducing fatigue on long trips. A reverse camera has also been included to help provide more visibility while backing up.

Drivability and Utility

Steering and suspension settings have also been optimized. The enlarged rear absorber along with extra front and rear springs and high performance valves, result to a flatter and more comfortable ride even on winding roads. Moreover, a steering wheel return control was integrated for better maneuverability at low speeds to relieve driver stress.

Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) and Brake Auto Hold (BAH) buttons are now part of the shift panel. For increased relaxation particularly during traffic situations, the former allows the brakes to be stepped on with less force, and the latter, if stationary, does not require a foot down on the pedal. These together with Active Stability Control (ASC), Hill Start Assist (HAS), and Traction Control (TCL) now come standard for automatic transmission variants.

Continuing to be the best in its class when it comes to ground clearance. Increased to 225-mm, this gives the driver a higher eye-point for better recognition of road conditions and added confidence especially during floods. Under the hood is a 1.5 MIVEC DOHC 16-valve with 103 hp and 141 n-M torque. Ever-reliable with respect to fuel economy while being assured of a powerful performance.

Retail price starts at 1,030,000 with 5 color options which are White Pearl, Graphite Gray, Black, Red, Sunshine Orange and the newest Blade Silver Metallic. For a more in-depth look of the variants, check out the brand’s official website or view it at any Mitsubishi Motors authorized outlet.

The New Xpander is available for test drive at the Reimagine Your Ride: The Mitsubishi Test Drive Tour from May 20 to 22 happening at Block 16 SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Honda advocates smart economical driving in the face of rising fuel prices

With pump prices having risen by two-figure up-ticks so far, Honda Cars Philippines offers sensible tips to fall back on for motoring in general and for driving their pioneering Earth Dreams CVT equipped models, in particular–their BR-V three row SUV, City urban commuter models, and Brio sub-compact hatchback all score impressive km/l ratings in the 20’s.

Press Statement by Honda Cars Philippines, Inc., “Save gas and money with fuel-efficient Honda vehicles,” 18 May 2022:

Honda has expressed its environmental goal of carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities by 2050. This encompasses the target for automobiles which is 100% electrification by 2040. On the way there, we will not relent on improving vehicle fuel efficiency, which is both practical and necessary in view of its impacts on health and global warming, and on consumption and spending.

In line with the global mission of preserving the environment, Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. has been offering a range of fuel-efficient models to choose from. Though it is worth noting that the fuel consumption would vary depending on how the owner uses and takes care of his/her vehicle. Lately, fuel prices in the Philippines have been skyrocketing, and this has indeed become a major frustration among motorists. That said, here are our top tips on how you can save on fuel and get the best out of your drive:

  1. Follow the prescribed maintenance schedule for your vehicle. Keeping your car in shape will help ensure good performance in the long run. Without a good tune-up, a vehicle consumes more fuel and is more prone to breakdowns. Give attention to air filters, as well as suspension and chassis parts. Check your owner’s manual or warranty booklet for the recommended maintenance schedule. Honda customers can visit www.hondaphil.com Virtual Showroom/After Sales for a detailed guide on the preventive maintenance and parts replacement schedule, and cost estimate for all models. Further, Honda prescribes only two maintenance visits a year at authorized Honda dealers compared with the quarterly maintenance of other brands. Learn more about Honda’s periodic maintenance in this video Truth About Honda PMS (Periodic Maintenance Service) – YouTube
  1. Get a fuel-efficient vehicle. This is definitely an important decision and so it will help to do research. Consider Honda, the technology behind the design and development of Honda vehicles speak of dynamic performance and reliability, combined with lower emissions because every drop of fuel is optimized. Honda is also among the first brands to equip its vehicles with a visual fuel-efficiency feedback mechanism, the Eco-assist system and Econ button, to promote fuel-efficient driving as a fun and rewarding experience.

Honda continues to improve its vehicles’ fuel economy in different driving conditions, whether in city trips with frequent stopping and starting, or in highway driving. Here are examples of fuel mileage derived from fuel economy runs organized by Honda Cars Philippines in partnership with the Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP):

Honda BR-V – with its 1.5 i-VTEC engine that produces 120ps, the BR-V attained a fuel economy of 22.58 km/L. This puts the affordable subcompact 7-seater SUV at the top of its class in horsepower rating with notable fuel efficiency.

Honda City – equipped with 1.5-liter DOHC i-VTEC engine, the City achieved a fuel mileage of 25.17 km/L. The variable valve timing and electronic lift control technology optimize engine response giving it power and fuel efficiency at the same time.

Honda Brio – powered by a 1.2-liter SOHC i-VTEC engine with CVT, the Brio showed an economy rating of 24.39 km/L. The subcompact hatchback exhibits power that also delivers great gas mileage and ample space, and breaks the norms of typical small cars.

The fuel economy runs were conducted with the AAP’s supervision, parameters include cruising speed of 60-80 kph at 1500-2000 rpm, and aircon setting of 24°C and blower fan speed of 1.

  1. Plan and combine trips. When safe, car-pooling is quite the option to reduce trips and fuel consumption. Plan your drive, avoid getting caught in rush-hour traffic, or use navigation apps to know the best route for your destination and escape congested areas.
  1. Drive smoothly, not aggressively. Smooth driving is safer for everyone on the road. On the other hand, sudden acceleration and hard braking both increase fuel consumption and emissions. Aggressive driving (speeding and rapid acceleration/braking), aside from being unsafe, may lower gas mileage by 15%–30% at highway speeds and 10%–40% in stop-and-go traffic.
  1. Minimize idling. You make the most of your fuel when you are in motion. On the other hand, staying idle for long means you’re burning fuel without going anywhere. Therefore, avoid idling, avoid traffic as much as you can, and drive your vehicle to warm it up.
  1. Get rid of all extra weight. Remember, the more weight a car needs to pull, the more effort the engine needs, and the more fuel it consumes. It is estimated that for every additional load of 100 pounds, your car’s fuel mileage decreases by 2%, and more when you’re driving up inclines. Remove unnecessary stuff you might be carrying in your car.
  1. Keep your tires properly inflated. Underinflated tires mean more rolling resistance and more work for your engine. Studies show a 1% decrease in tire pressure can lead to a 0.3% reduction in fuel economy and a shorter lifespan for your tires. And so, a good quality tire pressure gauge can come handy. Check your tires every two weeks to make sure you are within the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle’s load.

Isuzu Philippines’ Hajime Koso turns over reigns to Noboru Murakami

Isuzu Philippines Corporation (IPC) president Hajime Koso has handed over the reigns to new IPC top executive Noboru Murakami. Widely known for his excellent humor and bonhomie, Hajime Koso is their longest serving president, his 7 years with IPC seeing him steer the company through the challenges and the wins of this latest third of Isuzu’s 22 years as the country’s top truck brand.

At the turnover ceremony held yesterday at the Okada Manila in Pasay City, Koso said: “It’s been an honor working for Isuzu Philippines for the past seven years. I truly admire the dedication and resilience of the Filipino people, especially our team members in IPC. The last two years has been the most challenging, but we emerged to be stronger with the support of everyone in IPC including our business partners, to which I am truly grateful for.”

Koso leaves IPC for a new posting with Isuzu global management in Japan.

New IPC president Noboru Murakami’s last position before his appointment here was as general manager for mother company Isuzu Motors Limited (IML). He started with IML in 1995, focused initially on international sales, subsequently did corporate planning for eight years from 2003 to 2011, and then joined Isuzu North America where he eventually served as President and CEO from 2018 to 2020. His stint back in Japan during the height of the pandemic’s disruptions was as IML general manager for international sales.

During the turnover ceremony, Murakami acknowledged Koso’s accomplishments, admitting that he has big shoes to fill, and expressed his commitment to holding IPC’s lead in a market that they forecast as showing major growth in the commercial vehicle (CV) and light commercial vehicle (LCV) segments.

Murakami said: “Being on top puts more challenge to us, we cannot be complacent with what we currently offer. As always, our key is to listen to our customers, if there is anything to improve it has to be aligned with our customer’s needs and business requirements. Satisfying these needs at every touchpoints, whether for sales or aftersales will pave our way towards achieving ultimate ‘Customer Success’.”

Murakami also asserted that sustainability is the way forward for IPC.  In celebration of its 25th anniversary, IPC is working to get onto an eco-friendly sustainable track.

“As the number one truck brand, we have an even bigger responsibility to the society. For IPC, sustainability is no longer a choice but rather our way forward. We understand that as a social obligation, our company must put priority into protecting the environment without compromising customer success, if we want to continue doing business in the future,” said Murakami.

He explained that the new direction will manifest in their products and services as well as in their mindset: “This movement should not only be reflected in our products but also from within, meaning changes in our values, operations, and the way we do business moving forward. This is something that we want to instil in our team members and dealer network starting this year, a shift in mindset and priority towards a ‘Greener’ era for IPC.”
