Isuzu’s D-Max Limited with 200-unit production-run brandishes tactical-looking grille, class-topping 260mm clearance

Isuzu Philippines has rolled out the D-Max Limited, the first factory-accessorized variant of the popular pick-up’s third generation model that was introduced globally in June 2020 and here in March 2021. Priced at P1.580M, the new offering is based on the D-Max’s bestselling P1.460M 3.0 4×2 LS-A AT variant with a P0.120M price bump being asked for: (1) the exclusivity of a limited 200-unit run; (2) new front grille, side and rear treatments; and (3), an enhanced suspension system with mono-tube dampers and solid shackles that raise its ground clearance to a groundbreaking 260mm.

The new, limited-run offering spotlights the sweetspot in the middle of what is now the D-Max’s 9-variant lineup with its nearly P1M price spread between the P0.917M 1.9 liter RZ4E Single Cab 4×2 MT and the P1.905M top-spec’d 3.0 liter 4×4 LS-E AT. While already based on the popular 3.0 liter 2-wheel drive luxury trim variant, the D-Max Limited’s P0.120M price rise seems offset by more resale points gained from its 200-unit production run. It also helps that all modification accessories on the D-Max Limited come with brand authenticity, having been designed by Isuzu Accessories and Service Parts at their Thai production hub.

Introduced here in the same week that the face-lifted third generation D-Max was unveiled globally, the Limited’s front grille modification causes the special variant to fork-off earnestly from the original design while keeping it significantly different from the refreshed model with its revised fascia. The Limited’s blacked out grille opens up the venting, eliminating those horizontal upper-grille devices that look like upper fangs on the original design and like upturned tusks on the update. The D-Max Limited’s new grille is more milspec and tactical in comparison to the predatory creature looks on original and facelifted 3rd-gen D-Maxes–we’re saying this is a good thing.

The nitrogen-charged mono-tube shock absorbers mated to its stabilized double-wishbone  coil-sprung front, and to soft-ride leaf springs with solid shackles at the rear, have raised the D-Max Limited’s ground clearance up to an unprecedented 260mm. This is 20mm higher than the model’s top-of-the-line 4×4 LS-E variant’s 240mm (and 13mm more than the 247mm of the previous-generation model’s special 4×4 Boondock variant–itself having mono-tube shocks that raised it 12mm above its stock platform).

Predictably, many will point out the irony of lifting a rear-wheel driven 4×2 truck this high, possibly lobbying for a 4×4 all-terrain version of this limited-run special. But note that the 20mm upgrade also gets added to the 800mm maximum wading depth asserted by Isuzu for stock variants. And, even with the monsoon season having officially ended this week, images of sudden and paralyzing floods on national roads should remain vivid in buyers’ minds until next year’s drenchers come along, making that 260mm of class-topping clearance a deal-closing feature for the D-Max Limited as an ideal, and ironically premium, all-weather ute.

Suzuki Philippines rolls out S-presso GL AGS with automated manual transmission

Suzuki Philippines has officially launched the GL AGS variant of their popular S-presso mini crossover now equipped with the automated manual transmission they’ve already fielded in this market with their Celerio and Dzire models.

The launch event held at the Okada Manila yesterday was attended by global Suzuki representatives, Suzuki dealers, their partner banks, S-presso car club members and the motoring press. Noticeably grander than what the introduction of a model variant might warrant, the launch seemed to serve also as a celebration, it being the brand’s first major event after the official “all clear” on the long-running health crisis was declared last month.

The launch, by all rights, could’ve also celebrated Suzuki having completed the automated gearbox variants for all of their sub-compact five-seaters which include the S-presso crossover, the Celerio hatchback and the Dzire sedan. Listing at an SRP of P660,000, the S-presso GL AGS puts an automated manual transmission option on their lowest priced model (with the exception only of the base variant Dzire).

The GL AGS variant also puts an automated shifter on a true crossover rough roader. With a minimum of 180mm between it’s undercarriage and the ground, the S-presso has the highest clearance among their five-seaters with the Celerio having 170mm, the Dzire its 145mm and the Swift down at 120mm (note: their full-on off-roading and high-riding 4×4 Swift is officially a four-seater).

Isuzu Philippines rolls out first automated manual transmission on light-duty commercial truck

the NLR85E Smoother with its 4,490k gross vehicle weight, Isuzu seems to hit the sweet spot for addressing what they observe to be a growing logistics industry that’s held back by a dwindling cadre of expert drivers. The N-series Smoother brings turnkey expert driving to the mix while offering game-changing ease-of-use in typical city traffic and a weight cap plus a 10ft rear deck that give it freedom to roll on critical road arteries (like on EDSA with its reinstated ban on 4,500kg trucks).

Quezon City, Philippines | 15 October 2021–Isuzu Philippines has rolled out their latest N-Series light-duty truck, the NLR85E Smoother variant featuring an automated manual transmission (AMT) that is new here but has already been in mainstream use in Japan and other major markets.

Not a conventional automatic transmission (AT) either, Isuzu’s new Smoother uses an enhancement of the manual gearbox, an automated variation on their proven 6-speed MYY6S manual transmission (MT) where: (1) the single 325mm dry clutch plate has been replaced with same-diameter multiple wet clutches, (2) a fluid coupling with lock-up clutch replaces hard-contact with the engine’s flywheel (3) the manual foot-pedal mechanism has been removed and clutch operation has been delegated to solenoids and ECU operation, and (4) its automated operation uses algorithms that reflect truck driving best practices.

Cut out illustration of defining components of Isuzu’s automated manual transmission

On the new NLR85E Smoother with the MYY6S(AMT) gearbox, you get automated use of an otherwise manual transmission (gear selector stick but no clutch pedal) and this with a veteran driver’s knowledge and muscle memory right off the bat.  It features standard fuel-saving roll-outs in second gear, with optional override to first gear for laden or uphill starts, and an eco-mode toggle that gets you short-shifting (up-shifting early and at moderate revs) for minimized wear and maximized economy.

With the NLR85E Smoother and its 4,490kg gross vehicle weight, Isuzu squarely hits the needs of a growing logistics industry that’s held back by a dwindling cadre of expert drivers. The N-series Smoother brings turnkey driving expertise to the struggle, this while offering easy ‘matic operation in punishing city traffic, and a weight cap plus compact 10ft rear deck that give it freedom to roll on critical road arteries (like on EDSA with its reinstated ban on 4,500kg trucks).

Isuzu Philippines Corporation (IPC) president Hajime Koso confirms that this is the first time they have introduced any form of automatic or automated transmission on their light duty trucks, but he emphasizes that the Smoother‘s AMT engineering has been featured on their trucks in the Japanese market for years now.

IPC marketing head Joseph Bautista added that although the new MYY6S(AMT) gearbox is itself imported as a completely built up component, the NLR85E Smoother that it goes into remains to be assembled here like its MT counterpart.

IPC product planning head Robert Carlos said that the NLR85E Smoother could be the first of many new AMT variants and that they are studying the use of automated manual gearboxes in their other light- as well as medium- and heavy-duty models.

Starting price for the base cab and chassis NLR85E Smoother is PhP1,600,000–PhP95,000 higher than for its versatile but more conventional manual gearbox variant.

Press Statement by Isuzu Philippines Corp., “Isuzu N-series Smoother: drives like AT, fuel efficient like MT–the country’s number 1 truck brand introduces new innovative Automated Manual Transmission technology,” 15 October 2021:

Isuzu Philippines Corporation (IPC)’s mission to be every customer’s partner for success continues with the introduction of its latest model, Isuzu N-Series SMOOTHER.   This is the company’s first light duty truck installed with the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) technology, an innovative intelligent gearshift system.

Isuzu N-Series SMOOTHER operates without the clutch pedal and achieves automatic shift change by computer control.  This means the driver gets the performance of an MT on a 2-pedal operation.  Or basically, the Isuzu N-Series SMOOTHER provides the combined advantages of an AT’s easy driving operation and MT’s fuel efficiency.

“Being the number 1 truck brand in the country, Isuzu’s success comes from working closely with our customers, assessing their every need, and coming up with the best business solutions in every step of the way,” said IPC President Hajime Koso. “In the Philippines, trucks are maximized and utilized almost at 24/7 operations. And with the increasing demand for delivery, especially in logistics, truckers deal not just with the increase in their operation expenses, particularly fuel and maintenance, but also the need for more professional drivers which has become quite a problem. So, we thought, why not make our next truck address all these challenges and more,” Koso added.

The Isuzu N-Series SMOOTHER promises to deliver SMOOTHER business operation and SMOOTHER driving experience with these core benefits:

  1. Easy To Drive  – Isuzu N-Series SMOOTHER is not complicated to drive.  Its gearbox is designed like that of an AT and has 2 pedals only.   Newbie drivers and even female drivers can operate this truck with ease.  This also means less fatigue for drivers during long distance driving or when in traffic congested areas.
  1. Economical  – With the advance technology of AMT, Isuzu N-Series SMOOTHER automatically selects and shifts to the appropriate gear position.  This results to good fuel efficiency, saving you from high fuel expenses. And because it has no clutch pedal, there is no need to spend on clutch maintenance.
  1. Safety – With Isuzu N-Series SMOOTHER’s 2-pedal operation, the driver does not need to worry about changing gears and can therefore focus on the driving environment.  Safe driving is given priority.

The Isuzu N-Series SMOOTHER is powered by the 3.0-liter 4JJ1-TCC engine.  That is, a 4-cylinder, Turbo-intercooler, DOHC Common-rail Direct Injection, Blue Power Diesel Engine, with a maximum output of 124 PS and a maximum torque of 354 N-m.  It is equipped with Isuzu’s latest transmission model, MYY6S, which is a 6-speed AMT.  It has a GVW of 4,490 kg and can be fitted with various body applications, as below.

The Isuzu N-Series SMOOTHER also comes with added features that upgrades the truck driving experience such as tuner radio with USB, 2 speakers, charger port, cab power window, central door lock and cab tilt warning system.  It also comes with a 3-year and unlimited mileage warranty.

The Isuzu N-Series SMOOTHER is available in all authorized Isuzu Dealerships Nationwide beginning October.  For pricing and complete details visit or call any Isuzu dealer showroom or inquire in their official FB Pages.  Visit the Isuzu Philippines www.isuzuphil.com to learn more about the Isuzu N-Series SMOOTHER or watch the official digital launch on their official Facebook page.

Next-generation Isuzu mu-X introduced in the Philippines, new model’s first left-hand drive market

Isuzu Philippines Corporation (IPC) has officially launched the second generation mu-X today. After being introduced globally first in Thailand in October 2020 and then in Australia in July 2021, the Philippines, now, is the first left-hand drive (right-hand traffic) market where the next generation Isuzu mu-X has been rolled out. IPC product planning head Robert Carlos confirms that this move indicates the significance of the Philippine market where sales of the latest D-Max pickup model that they introduced last year–basis of the new mu-X SUV–was better than in Australia.

Like the new D-Max, the latest mu-X features improved 1.9 liter RZ4E and 3.0 liter 4JJ3-TCX turbodiesel engine options. At 2855mm, its wheelbase is now the longest among those of Japanese branded mid-size, body-on-frame SUV’s. And, while that long wheelbase makes it among the largest in its class, its re-engineered body and chassis also make the new mu-X among the least heavy with curb weight numbers starting at 1,820kg.

The new Isuzu mu-X will be on offer through IPC’s dealers starting tomorrow, September 23, with the following variants and corresponding list prices (in PHP millions):

3.0L 4×4 LS-E ATP2.45M
3.0L 4×2 LS-E ATP2.10M
3.0L 4×2 LS-A ATP1.90M
RZ4E 4×2 LS-A MTP1.77M
RZ4E 4×2 LS ATP1.59M

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE & 5-STAR SAFETY

Isuzu takes pride in being the leader for diesel engine technology. At the heart of the All-New mu-X is the new 4JJ3-TCX turbo engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission. This drivetrain produced 190 PS of power and 450 Nm of torque for smooth, effortless acceleration even when you need to carry or tow heavy load. On the other hand, specific variants equipped with the RZ4E-TC engine, now has improved performance due to better exhaust emission creating lower levels of noise and vibration as well as further increasing engine reliability and fuel economy.

The chassis of this latest model of the mu-X also now has larger side rails and has been reinforced through an 8-Cross Member design to not just increase torsional rigidity but also safety for added protection in the event of a side or rear collision. Not only that, both front and back suspensions have been redesigned to minimize body rolls when cornering ensuring driver confidence not to mention a more relaxed cabin. Standing at 1,822-mm and is 2,855-mm long, which is 10 mm less and 25 mm more respectively than its predecessor. With its reliable steel underbody protection and a wading depth of up to 800-mm, wherever you plan to go, the mu-X will take charge.

Built to conquer any terrain with ease. The Terrain Command Select Dial lets the driver switch between 2WD-high and 4WD-high when at 100kph or select 4WD-low to further increase traction and control. For off-road enthusiasts, the Rough Terrain Mode brings their experience up a notch. It is a driver aid that maximizes drivability when faced with technically challenging and slippery conditions.

5-star safety features by ASEAN NCAP
Electronic parking brake with auto hold

“Intelligent Safety” was also one of the top priorities in developing the brand-new mu-X, which achieved a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating. The Traviz: Isuzu’s genius move into new and old markets

With the recently introduced Traviz, Isuzu Philippines manages to enter a new segment, globally, and re-enter an old one, locally. With the Traviz, Isuzu expands their market to include 3-ton lightweight trucks notched under their existing light-duty haulers. And, now, particularly with the utility van (UV) configuration of the Traviz, Isuzu revisits their niche  in the old Asian utility vehicle (AUV) market, bringing back a classic Jeepney-like configuration that predates that of the bestselling Crosswind wagon they were compelled to retire in 2018.

New lightweight truck for developing markets

Ironically, for the country’s top truck brand, the Traviz is their first hauler in the 2.5 to 3 ton gross vehicle weight (GVW) range. Before this lightweight truck was introduced, Isuzu’s range reached down only as far as the 4-ton NLR77 that they’ve configured, at one point, as the rather large multi-purpose UV-bodied Flexitruck

Named the TRAGA for Indonesia which Isuzu figures to be a growth driver for the world’s light commercial vehicles market, they didn’t even have their own in-house model until the new lightweight truck was introduced for the first time globally in April 2018. For decades, they had instead marketed the Isuzu Bison, a re-badged Mitsubishi L300 with an Isuzu engine.

Indonesia’s TRAGA was purpose-built for developing markets by the Isuzu Group and their Isuzu Global CV Engineering Center (IGCE)–the group’s designated truck engineering unit for emerging markets.  In their press statement about the global launch from Indonesia, Isuzu Motors Limited described the TRAGA as a “full-fledged lightweight truck” developed by adopting “commercial vehicle technologies accumulated within the company based on the D-MAX pickup truck.”

They seem to want to emphasize that for the TRAGA/Traviz they started with the rugged engineering of their usual 4 tons and heavier truck platforms and scaled this down to LCV weights and payloads based on their experience with their popular D-MAX pickup. In their product launch press statement, they assert that the TRAGA/Traviz features a robust and spacious cabin based on that of their N-series light-duty trucks, and a rugged ladder frame based on that of the D-MAX pickup. Their engine choice for the new lightweight truck? The classic Isuzu 4JA1-L low boost turbodiesel–the engine that also powers the Crosswind AUV as well as the re-badged Bison that they’re replacing.

The new, Euro IV compliant Blue Power 4JA1-L low boost turbodiesel with CRDi fuel injection

Shortly after the TRAGA was introduced globally out of Indonesia in April 2018, Isuzu Philippines previewed it here during that year’s Philippine International Motors Show (PIMS) in October 2018. The exhibition was meant for measuring local interest and enough such interest was observed to fast track adapting the new model to this market. In record time, the right-hand drive Euro II TRAGA was localized as the left-hand drive Euro IV Traviz for a Philippine launch a year later in November 2019.

Here, it now competes in a new segment (for Isuzu) that’s been dominated by the 2.5 ton Mitsubishi L300, and the 3.0 ton  Kia K2500 and Hyundai H100, and where the Traviz’s newer and purposeful engineering yields a best-in-class payload capacity that makes it an ideal platform for all-purpose utility-van (UV) configurations.

Best-in-class with an old AUV configuration

It took some actual wheel time with the Traviz to validate the notion that while it opens a new truck market segment for the big Japanese brand, it also reprises, in fact reinvents, their pitch for this market’s old and defining AUV segment.

Largest and heaviest among its variants with a long wheelbase and fitted out with a utility van (UV) passenger and cargo carrying rear body that made it about 5 meters long, the Traviz L UV was my main vehicle, in fact my only ride, for several days. It had to be for the duration of the lendout because the parking spot I managed to arrange for it boxed in my regular ride–a sub-compact passenger van.

It is a full-fledged truck. Getting into the driver’s seat in that tall, big-boned cab-over cabin, and the bubble-cockpit perspective that rewards the effort, are enough reminder of the Traviz’s truck pedigree. But, paired with a compact rear deck over a relatively short wheelbase, the Traviz is surprisingly maneuverable and fairly easy to keep in the middle of its shipping lane, so to speak–easy to keep out of trouble on tight or crowded city streets.

The Traviz L UV is an excellent city carry-all.  Certainly bigger than my usual transport, this 5 meter Traviz configuration is still more compact, and maneuverable, than any mid-size pickup truck that comes to mind, including Isuzu’s own D-Max. And this while having the seating capacity for 18 to 20 people–2 to 3 times more carrying capacity than any three-row SUV’s.  And, among those sleek sporty pickups and SUVs, the Traviz’s greater utility seems self-evident and even … generic.

This country’s “utes” aren’t the pickup trucks of developed countries like the US, Canada and Australia (and certainly not the mid-size SUVs that are based on pickup truck platforms). Pickups (and SUVs) cost too much for the purposes of most end users. Observe how the market’s more successful models needed gussying up into premium sporters–touches to distinguish these as stylish on and off-road vehicles for upper bracket buyers.

End of the day, pickups and SUVs will never seat the minibus-load of people we expect real utility vehicles to transport when needed. It must be the jeepney archetype that’s behind this. A passenger jeepney is more useful than an owner-type, after all. So, here, our utes follow the jeepney template: a truck’s bench seating up front and rear seating that’s side-facing (allowing the vehicle to seat ten or more folks), and that’s foldable (making room for cargo that’ll put food, or eventually be food, on the table).

It’s a configuration that’s been tested and proven by the slew of first-wave AUVs that emerged from the country’s Progressive Car Manufacturing Program in the 1970s (AUVs with simple-stamped jeepney-type bodies like the Toyota Tamaraw, Ford Fiera, Mitsubishi Cimarron and GM Harabas). And it’s an AUV format that persists now with the decades-old Mitsubishi L300 with FB body (meaning UV, like “Frigidaire” is to “refrigerator”) that replaced the Cimarron, as well as with the newer Kia 2500 Karga and Hyundai H-100 Shuttle utility vans.

Now, among its Mitsubishi, Kia and Hyundai rivals, the Traviz with its newer truck engineering is the only one that can take on the heavy burden of a UV rear body and still retain a useful payload of over 1 ton (with a 450kg UV rear body, I estimate the Traviz L’s net payload to hover at around 1,200kg).

Back to basics

On the global stage, the 3 ton Isuzu Traviz gives the top truckmaker a firm foothold in the lightweight truck segment. An excellent move by all accounts since it opens up a whole new segment that’s been untapped here and just perfunctorily served in other markets with a re-badged Mitsubishi mainstay.  But here where our jeepney-influenced and AUV-educated sensibilities make us expect all lightweight and light-duty truck platforms to have UV rear body configurations, the Traviz also represents an industry giant’s next pitch at an old segment.

Its first generation launched as the HiLander in 1991 before being renamed for its second generation iteration in 2000, Isuzu’s wildly successful Crosswind is actually a latecomer to this market’s trademark AUV segment. They missed by several decades the 1970’s first wave of simple-stamped jeepney-type truck AUVs. Now, with the Traviz, Isuzu gets a chance to turn back the clock.

Speculation on whether they’ll bring back the Crosswind with the Traviz’s updated Euro IV compliant 4JA1-L diesel engine can stay just that … speculation. The 3 ton Traviz with UV rear body is already aimed straight at the basic, more pragmatic first-wave AUV segment where entrepreneurial customers use their utes for small and medium scale businesses as well as for big family transport. Coming from the Crosswind sporty status symbol ute, Isuzu and their customers are now challenged by the Traviz to consider a tough big-boned breadwinner AUV instead.

Editor’s note: stay tuned for a second feature that answers how a de-tuned Euro IV diesel from the 2.2 ton Crosswind succeeds at putting precise power to the 3.0 ton Traviz saddled with a 0.4 ton UV body.

Hino Philippine introduces next-gen 300 Series light duty trucks

Hino Motors Philippines (HMP), the country’s exclusive distributor of Hino trucks and buses, has launched their new, next-generation 300-Series light-duty truck models.

In the official press statement for the launch, HMP noted that introduction of the new models come in time to meet the demands of a thriving e-commerce sector. Under the travel restrictions imposed by the current health crisis, logistics providers are compelled to field reliable trucks for final-distance delivery of essential goods in urban traffic grids. HMP further speaks to logistics companies with the line: “Built for durability and usability, the all-new Hino 300 Series is designed to support business owners looking to invest in light-duty trucks that can handle heavy-duty operations.”

The new Hino 300 Series light-duty trucks come in narrow cab models with 3,800 to 4,400kg gross vehicle weight (GVW) ratings, and in wide cab configurations rated at 4,400 to 8,500kg GVW. The new lineup is powered by their proven N04C-VC Euro-IV compliant common-rail injected turbodiesel tuned for 136PS and 390Nm of peak power and torque and paired with a 5-speed transmission for narrow cab models, or for 150PS and 420Nm with a 6-speed gearbox for wide cab models.

HMP reports that one model variant has the option for a 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with optimized engine braking and an expanded clutch lock-up range (for earlier solid-contact override of the hydraulic torque converter). Some variants come with SRS airbags and an anti-lock brake system (ABS). For driver convenience, interior appointments on the new Hino 300 Series now include larger instruments displays, updated power windows and door locks, and roomier ergonomic seats.

Their press statement reports HMP president Mitsuhary Tabata as saying: “We recognize the importance of the local transport and logistics industry given the challenges the country is currently facing. As the country works toward economic recovery, HMP will continue providing Total Support to its customers and lifetime value to Filipinos and the country. With the introduction of our all-new Hino 300 Series, we hope to not only support local suppliers and retailers in responding to the current demands of the market but also to help them in expanding to other businesses and finding new opportunities.”

Isuzu Philippines launches next-gen D-Max with DNA that improves on Chevrolet and Ford rivals and upgrades Mazda counterpart

Isuzu Philippines has just launched the next-generation D-Max and this new model’s lineage covers so much ground against rival brands that it’s been top of mind here since the global launch out of Thailand back in October 2019. The new model improves on the second generation D-Max which has underpinnings shared with GM’s Chevrolet Colorado that’s the platform for the US Army’s new Infantry Squad Vehicle, and represents an upgrade to the Mazda BT-50 which was previously based closely (same chassis and engine options) on the current generation (T6) Ford Ranger.

For this third iteration of their popular mid-size pickup truck, Isuzu discontinued an engineering partnership with Chevrolet that’s been in place since the 1970’s for developing three generations of Isuzu Faster models and the two Isuzu D-Max generations that succeeded these. The platform of the previous generation D-Max and current generation Chevrolet Colorado will likely be forked off and continued since it now serves as foundation to the winning prototype for the US Army’s Infantry Squad Vehicle, initial volumes for which were delivered in October 2020 (a year after the third generation D-Max was launched globally).

Influencing D-Max development now is new ally Mazda. In July 2016, three years into the D-Max’s six-year development period, Isuzu was appointed as OEM of Mazda’s next generation BT-50 pickup truck.  Similar to Isuzu’s linkage with Chevrolet, Mazda had been relying on Ford Ranger foundations since the 1990’s for their final generation B2500 pickup and two generations of the BT-50 model that succeeded this.  Now, based closely on the latest generation D-Max complete with its trademark Isuzu 3.0 and 1.9 liter turbodiesel engine options, the third generation Mazda BT-50 was launched globally in June 2020, just a few months after its counterpart Isuzu model. Isuzu Philippines President Hajime Koso confirms that Isuzu Thailand runs assembly lines for supplying this market with D-Max trucks and other markets with the new Mazda BT-50 model.  (Mazda Philippines which recently introduced their BT-50 limited edition Pangolin variant still has the Ford-based second-generation model on offer.)

Key specs

On the new D-Max that Isuzu asserts to be stronger and safer, we noted the following integral features (characteristics that come with the package and cannot be straightforwardly acquired or added on with aftermarket enhancements):

  1. The new 4JJ3-TCX top-spec 3.0 liter engine option delivers 190PS @ 3600rpm (a 17PS increase in power) and 450NM @ 1600~2600rpm (a 70NM increase in torque that breaks through the 400NM threshold), all these reportedly by improving on the previous generation’s 4JJ1-TCX with …
    • a new cylinder head
    • a new cylinder block
    • new pistons
    • a new Denso-sourced fuel injection system delivering 25 percent more pressure and 20 percent more efficiency
  1. Improved balance and handling with a slightly longer wheelbase as well as the engine being moved back and mounted with its center slightly behind the front axle, in front mid-ship position
  1. Rationalized engine and fuselage layouts that result in a slightly shorter overall length (5.277m versus 5.295m before) that nevertheless bounds what is essentially a larger model with its lengthened wheelbase (3.125m versus 3.095m before) and cargo bay (1.570m versus 1.485m before)
  1. Stronger, bigger-boned proportions that put taller shoulders on its full body length, and stiffer shortened pillars and a squat squinty windscreen cage on its reinforced cabin
  1. A ladder frame with expanded cross-section and improved placement of cross-members, as asserted by Isuzu, that make it lighter but also 23 percent stiffer than before
  1. Fuselage and undercarriage engineering that increase the D-Max’s ground clearance (0.240m on top-spec 4×4 variants) and permit Isuzu to officially assert a maximum wading depth of 0.800m (which, on the D-Max, is well above the usual benchmark of the midpoint of a vehicle’s wheels)

Further, with the third generation D-Max, Isuzu Philippines introduces a new top-spec variant, the LS-E, that exclusively features automated conveniences as well as their Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS) package with safety telematics for forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic headlights high-beam, and lane departure alarm.

Price points

As stated by Isuzu Philippines Vice President for Sales Yasuhiko Oyama during the launch event last March 4, introductory prices for the new third-generation D-Max will remain at par with the price-points of the previous model.  Although, with the addition of a top-spec variant featuring first world telematics, prices of their 9 variants now show a notable P0.968M spread between the P0.857M SRP for the single-cab 4×2 MT base configuration and the P1.825M list price for their new LS-E 4×4 AT top-of-the-line variant.

2021 / third-generation D-Max variant list prices (in PHP million)

3.0 4×4 LS-E AT__________ 1.825
3.0 4×2 LS-A AT________ 1.390
3.0 4×4 LS MT_________ 1.630
3.0 4×2 LS MT_______ 1.320
RZ4E 4×2 LS AT______ 1.309
RZ4E 4×2 LS MT____ 1.219
3.0 4×4 LT MT_____ 1.288
RZ4E 4×2 LT MT___ 0.987
RZ4E 4×2 Single Cab MT__ 0.857

Targets

Also during the March 4 launch, when asked about how many third-generation D-Max units they expect to sell this year, Isuzu Philippines’ Yasuhiko Oyama said that they expect this roll-out in March to increase their share in the pickup truck market from 8 percent in 2020 to 15 percent by the end of 2021. We have to say, with their aggressive pricing and the D-Max’s DNA now putting cross-hairs on key rivals, with Isuzu improving on the previous-generation D-Max as well as on the still-current generation Chevrolet Colorado and (through Mazda) the present-generation Ford Ranger, the leading truckmaker’s goal of nearly doubling their share numbers looks feasible.

Hino introduces new Japan-sourced medium-duty 10-wheeler with cost-efficient 6×2 drivetrain and top-end 16-ton payload

Hino Motors Philippines (HMP), the country’s second-largest and longest-operating truckmaker, has just introduced the 500-series FL8J, a new 26-ton rigid-frame 10-wheeler truck with an efficiency-oriented 6×2 drivetrain.

New Hino 500 FL8J being introduced by HMP president Mitsuharu Tabata

Brought in as a completely built-up cab and chassis platform from Japan and listed at a starting price of P3.775M, the Hino 500 FL8J features a 7.48m wheelbase, the longest in its class, and a 16-ton, 160 percent load factor payload with 32-foot rear body options.

With a 6-cylinder turbocharged, inter-cooled and directly injected diesel delivering 280PS and 824Nm to the first of its two rear axles, and this through an advanced 9-speed manual gearbox, the FL8J puts equal emphasis on stopping its 26,000kg gross vehicle weight, mounting dual-circuit air-actuated brakes with heavy-duty truck ABS.

The 7480mm between its front and rearmost axles give the new medium-duty Hino 500 FL8J the longest wheelbase in its class

The new Hino 500 FL8J gives the truckmaker the widest lineup of medium-duty trucks in the country and adds that general cargo 6×2 drivetrain option to the existing 6×4 offering on their FM8J 10-wheeler that’s meant for heavy aggregates tipper service.

Mills, Jr.

HMP President Mitsuharu Tabata further highlighted the Hino FL 10-wheeler truck’s significance to Hino’s decades-long mission. “Every part of the new truck unit is engineered to deliver powerful performance. Like its predecessors, the truck bears the premium Japanese quality Hino is globally known for. This new truck embodies Hino’s mission of making the world a better place by helping people and goods get where they need to go – safely, economically and environmentally responsible,” shared Mitsuharu.

Powerful truck performance

The new Hino 500 truck, which has a complete truck model name of FL8J, supports a load capacity of up to 18,620kg and a total gross vehicle weight of 26,000kg. It is powered by Hino J08E, a six-cylinder and Euro 4-compliant engine that delivers increased output, greater cooling, improved fuel efficiency and lower carbon emission.

The truck uses a nine-speed manual transmission system and has 320L fuel capacity. It can reach up to 108kph maximum speed and 2,600rpm maximum engine speed, with 40.4 percent gradeability at full load capacity. Its suspension features semi-elliptical leaf springs on both the front and the rear side.

Improved safety and comfort

Highlighting Hino’s emphasis on safety, the all-new Hino FL truck is equipped with full-air dual circuit brakes with anti-lock braking system (ABS), featuring leading and trailing shoe brake system with auto brake shoe adjuster and air operated spring brake to assist during parking.

The truck is built with Hino’s Easy Start (ES) technology, which assists the driver in safely maneuvering the vehicle during steep inclines by maintaining a breaking force that prevents the truck from rolling backward and making other accidental movements. The ES technology simultaneously allows the driver to reduce fatigue by resting their feet off the brake pedals and automatically releasing the brakes once the clutch is engaged. This feature, which operates in both forward and reverse gears, optimizes the truck’s overall performance by minimizing maintenance costs through reduced stress placed on the brakes and clutch while boosting driver comfort and safety.

The easy-to-adjust seat suspension system is ergonomically designed to secure a smooth and safe ride for the driver and helps prevent back injuries. The truck’s air conditioning system, power windows and doors are all strategically assembled to boost the driver’s comfort, performance and productivity.

Availability

The all-new Hino FL truck is available in all Hino 3S dealerships nationwide at the starting price of Php3.775M for a 32ft. body. Customers may request a quotation online through Hino’s official Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/HinoMotorsPH/) page or website (http://hino.com.ph/).
