Volvo Group rolls out mobile app for EV accident first responders

Acknowledging the new dangers of electric vehicle accidents–particularly on carriers hauling heavy combustible cargo while also facing the risk of runaway electrical fires–global truckmaker Volvo has rolled out a mobile app to ensure situational awareness among EV accident responders. The new app provides real-time situational info and guidance on active accident scenes, reinforcing compliance to new safety procedures even among veteran response crews.

Press Statement by the Volvo Group, “Volvo Group launches world’s first electric truck safety app with AR technology for first responders,” 16 May 2023:

Building on its long heritage of safety innovations, Volvo Group is the first truck manufacturer to launch an Augmented Reality (AR) safety app for electric trucks, designed specifically to support first responders in an emergency. The app is developed to deliver instant, valuable information from the electric truck to the emergency services team arriving on the scene to guide them in real-time and ensure safe rescue conditions.

Electric trucks will change the world, not only in terms of making transportation more sustainable, but also in how we drive and interact with the trucks themselves. The technology involved – specifically the high-voltage systems capable of powering a heavy electric truck – is also changing how we regard emergency response, as it requires its own set of new safety parameters and routines.

“Volvo Group’s overall ambition is to deliver 100 percent safe products. We are proud to be at the forefront of the electric truck revolution with high-performing solutions, but we also recognize the importance of ensuring the safety of first responders who are called to an emergency should an incident with an electric vehicle occur,” says Lars Stenqvist, Chief Technology Officer Volvo Group. “The new AR app is a powerful tool that can support the emergency services to quickly and safely secure the site, while minimizing the risk of injury to themselves and others.”

The Emergency Response Guide app, now available for download free of charge from the Android and the Apple stores, provides safety information for all Volvo Group heavy electric truck brands, including Volvo Trucks, Renault Trucks and Mack Trucks. For Mack electric trucks, the AR features will be added during June 2023.

By using a combination of connectivity, camera, sensors, 3D modeling, and augmented reality overlays, the safety app can provide first responders with a detailed view of the vehicle. It offers information on the location of high-voltage cables, battery packs, and other key components as well as step-by-step instructions on how to safely shut down the electric vehicle’s power supply in case of an emergency.

The safety app has been developed by a team of experts at Volvo Group’s Research & Development facilities in Sweden, France, and the United States. Apart from augmented reality information and 3D models, the app also contains all safety documentation relating to the electric truck, which will be accessible to the app user once the truck is identified.

“The safety app has been tested in a variety of real-world scenarios and has received positive feedback from first responders who have tried it in the field,” says Vincent Barnoux, AR Expert & Business Solution Engineer at Volvo Group.

Volvo Group is committed to promoting the safe and responsible use of electric vehicles and the development of this app is just one example of the company’s ongoing efforts in this area. The Volvo Group is investing heavily in the development of electric vehicle technology and offers a wide range of electric solutions for commercial use.

The new Emergency Response Guide app is available for download from the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Pasang Masda’s strong commitment to uplifting the quality of public transportation has led them to organizing this movement towards modernizing and continuously improving their fleet. Pasang Masda’s fleet only comprised of Isuzu PUVs. They are planning to add more of these newly designed PUVs to their fleet which will be utilized on additional routes within the Metro.

“We all love our old jeepneys due to its durability and reliability, and today, we are providing you the same core values plus more. With the new Isuzu PUV you don’t just get durability, reliability, and fuel efficiency but also an elevated comfort and convenience,” said VP Oyama.

To complete the package, IPC also offers an extensive aftersales support. With its 48 outlets nationwide which are all capable of servicing light to heavy-duty trucks and nationwide parts availability, transport cooperatives will not have to worry about vehicle maintenance and operation downtime. At Isuzu, their purchase is just the beginning of a long-term partnership because IPC together with its dealers makes sure that transport cooperatives will get the most out of their Isuzu PUV.

Former Isuzu Mexico CEO is new Isuzu Philippines president

Announced last month, Tetsuya Fujita’s replacement of Noboru Murakami as Isuzu Philippines president was made official at a turnover ceremony held at the Ilustrado restaurant in historic Intramuros of Manila yesterday.

Having joined Isuzu Philippines last year (replacing long running former president Hajime Koso), Noboru Murakami saw the major truckmaker retain its long-standing market lead with a 48 percent share, the transition of their factory to the use of sustainable energy, and all these while dealing with post-pandemic recovery in 2022. He leaves for his new post as CEO and president of Isuzu North America which serves the region where new president Tetsuya Fujita had once been Isuzu’s corporate planning manager.

Fujita had been corporate planning manager with Isuzu Commercial Truck of America from 2005 to 2010. Afterwards, he was general manager for sales with Isuzu Motors International Operations Thailand (IMIT) until 2017, and then chairman and CEO of Isuzu Motors de Mexico until 2021.

Isuzu’s official statement for the turnover event reports that Fujita would have Isuzu Philippines continue it’s decades-long market leadership by continuing to expand their dealer network and by maintaining strong customer relationships. They further state that Fujita is committed to Isuzu’s “Road to Progress” vision for greener and sustainable operations that his predecessor Noboru Murakami launched last year.

Fujita said, “As the leading truck brand in the industry, we will continue innovating new products that will assist in the progress of the country while displaying more responsibility to the society and the environment through our Road to Progress vision.

Hino pitches modern successor to iconic 1970’s Love Bus

Hino has reprised the Love Bus badge, now pitching their HS8J low floor city bus as the modern successor to that beloved people mover of 1970’s pop-culture fame. Just as the original city commuter offered novel amenities such as plush seats and fully ducted air-conditioning, Hino now touts the modern Love Bus as having: a low-floor, step-free and easy embarkation design; a folding ramp and dedicated wheelchairs space for PWD ready access; and a Sharp Plasmacluster ion generator for scrubbing bacteria and viruses from internal air. Notably, the modern Love Bus also features a ZF 6-speed conventional torque converter automatic transmission that could make for smoother city crawls as well as mitigate driver fatigue.

Press Statement by Hino Motors Philippines, “Get to know Hino’s modern Love Bus,” 16 June 2022:

Manila, Philippines, 16 June 2022Hino Motors Philippines (HMP) reignites the Love Bus nostalgia with its newest people carrier, the HS8J Low Floor City Bus. Keeping true to its predecessor’s legacy, this modern Love Bus offers smooth and pleasurable commutes for urban passengers. Designed for city operations, the HS8J Low Floor Bus features a ground clearance of 375 mm. This allows for a lower center of gravity, enhancing ride stability while reducing sway and roll inside the cabin. This makes it the ideal ride, even for standing passengers.

Prioritizing passenger convenience, the new Hino Low Floor City Bus features a side kneeling function. This provides ease of getting in and out of the vehicle as doors can be lowered to the standard gutter height. This emphasis on convenience is also apparent in the bus’s step-free design where passengers walk in to a full-flat floor. With other low entry city buses, passengers need to tackle a level of stairs before reaching the aisle. With the HS8J’s design, commuters have ready access to the aisle and seats right upon boarding. In fact, this bus features a larger flat-floor area compared with other low floor city buses plying our roads. A folding ramp for boarding as well as a dedicated space for wheelchairs are integrated in the vehicle to accommodate priority passengers.

Adding on comfort, the HS8J optimizes cabin space with a combination of front and side-facing seats. This configuration creates a spacious aisle for standing passengers while maintaining generous legroom for those seated. This bus can carry up to 62 passengers, 36 seated and 26 standing. Equipped with warm LED interior lighting and built-in 32-inch TV monitors, commuting can finally be enjoyable. The bus’s powerful air-conditioning by Denso comes with SHARP Plasmacluster Ion Generator thatpurifies cabin air by disabling airborne contaminants. This, along with its antibacterial and antiviral interior panels give commuters peace of mind as they utilize public transport.

A relaxing ride is only possible when the driver and passengers are at ease. The Hino Low Floor Bus runs on a J08E common rail, direct injection Euro 4 engine, coupled with a ZF 6-speed automatic transmission. This combination brings powerful performance at 280Ps output and 824Nm of torque while maintaining efficient fuel combustion for a smoother ride. The HS8J is also equipped with front and rear auto adjusting disc brakes with ABS to ensure safe braking during emergency situations and through various road conditions.

“Hino is proud to offer this new HS8J Low Floor City Bus. As the only commercial vehicle brand in the country offering complete One-Stop Shop advantage for customers, Hino is ready and committed to support the Filipino entrepreneur. From truck chassis supply, to rear body design and production, special utility requirements and all the way through aftersales, we offer maximized uptime while minimizing costs. That’s Hino’s Total Support guarantee.” said Mr. Mitsuharu Tabata, President of Hino Motors Philippines.

Through the years, the Love Bus has become an icon that made its mark not just on the roads, but also in the Filipino commuters’ hearts. Experience the modern Love Bus through the Hino HS8J Low Floor City Bus available at your nearest Hino dealership.
