Chevron underscores success of young business folk in Caltex retailer operations

In an official statement last May 21, Chevron Philippines, marketer of Caltex products and filling stations, took stock of how numerous young entrepreneurs now operate successful businesses as Caltex retailers. Canvassed were eight people, with ages ranging from 21 to 39 and averaging 31 years old, who manage the operations of nine Caltex stations in northern, central and southern Luzon.

Press Statement by Chevron Philippines, Inc. (CPI), “Young entrepreneurs find success as Caltex retailers–Caltex advantage paves way for young retailers to start and grow their business amid uncertain times,” 2021:

Caltex-Fairview_photo-1

Manila, Philippines | May 21, 2021– Millennials and Generation Z are interested to go into business to secure their future and help the society. Studies reveal that 66 percent of millennials  and 54 percent of Gen Z  aim to start their own business. While new business models continue to emerge in the midst of the changing times, there exists a long-standing, future-ready opportunity for the younger generations—the energy industry.

Investing in the energy industry can be the young generations’ springboard to reach the future they envision. Caltex, marketed by Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), provides this opportunity for young and aspiring entrepreneurs.

Take a journey around these young Caltex retailers’ stories.

Blazing new trails as Caltex retailers

At 21, Joyce Villanueva is seizing the art and science of running her family’s Caltex station in San Ildefonso, Bulacan. The idea of managing a big business at a young age seemed daunting at first, but willingly embracing the process enabled her to work her way up. She is now taking on their business’ operations, human resource, finance, and safety management roles.

Caltex-Bulacan-Joyce-Villan

Villanueva underscored how Caltex provides retailers valuable assistance through its business development fund program, supportive business consultants, and the Caltex Academy, a platform where retailers are provided training materials and get upskilled for effective station management. Witnessing how Caltex is a worthwhile investment for young retailers, she shared, “We chose Caltex because they communicate very well to us and assist us, from the construction to operations phase.”

Jose Allen Cantos, 39, also operates his first Caltex site in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro. He has opened a fuel retail business as he sees that it provides an essential commodity to the public. He also added that “the feeling of security and business continuity” amid the pandemic is present. Cantos believes that Caltex quality products and prestige are his competitive edge in the market. He also emphasized that the brand provides holistic, flexible, and readily available support for both young and experienced retailers.

Villaluna-siblings_photo-3

Antonio Mari Villarin, 25, together with his siblings Luisa and Paula, who are both 29, currently manage their newly opened Caltex station in Cabuyao, Laguna. Being new to the business, the three had to study more about the industry. With Caltex’s help, they are already learning the ropes. For them, being a Caltex retailer is challenging yet fulfilling as they get to work and learn together, while providing clean fuels for motorists.

Caltex provides end-to-end support for new entrepreneurs to help them run their business effectively. This includes construction and building assistance, and access to Chevron Business Point – retailers’ day-to-day online transactional interface.

Advancing in the energy industry with Caltex

Caltex also helps its retailers strategize and grow their businesses through continuous trainings and dedicated business consultants.

“Caltex has industry-leading retailer support from our business consultants who guide us through the whole gamut of pricing, wet stock management of fuel, and safe operations of stations. This enables us to have that distinct Caltex advantage,” said Don Dexter Agujo, 38, who currently operates three Caltex stations in San Pascual and Lemery, Batangas, and one along SLEX Northbound, Laguna.

Don-Dexter-Agujo_photo-4

For Agujo, the most rewarding part of his Caltex journey is seeing himself become an “active agent” in fueling change by providing excellent customer service even amid a pandemic and giving back to the communities where they operate.

Currently handling two Caltex stations in Candon City, Ilocos Sur, Sherlyn Dela Cruz also aims to pay it forward by providing employment opportunities. “My goal is not to hire people to sell fuel, but to sell fuel to hire more people,” she said. This drive helped her persevere to get a grip on the complexities of business management at the age of 27.

Sherlyn-Dela-Cruz_photo-5

Trust has been the thrust of Dela Cruz’s partnership with Caltex. “Caltex gives the assurance that it would always be there to support its retailers through thick and thin. It also provides effective general marketing strategies for existing and potential customers,” she said.

Dylan Jon Ferrer, 37, currently runs two stations in Fairview and EDSA, Quezon City under his team’s company, TripleF Ventures Corporation. Caltex has been his family’s go-to station since then and he had always been curious about how a fuel station work, adding that his parents used to call him “certified Batang Caltex.’” From this sprang his interest to partner with Caltex.

Caltex-Fairview-Dylan-Ferre

Ferrer noted Caltex’s overwhelming support throughout his retailing journey. “They also offered us to undergo the New Retailers Onboarding Program where we learned a lot about the five-star quality brand of Caltex,” he said. Ferrer advises young entrepreneurs to trust and believe in their brand, invest in their people by setting an employee-centric culture, and analyze their competition.

These young retailers share the same fuel to success—their grit and the right partner. Success is more rewarding with Caltex as it means achieving one’s business goals while helping communities progress. With Caltex’s strong portfolio, seasoned or budding entrepreneurs can get ahead of the competition.

Another Caltex station opened in San Mateo, Isabela, ready to perk up the daily drives of motorists in the area. This service station is strategically located along the country’s principal transport backbone, Maharlika Highway, which connects Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Cabuyao is often called the “Golden Bell City” while the cove-shaped Batangas City is dubbed as the “Industrial Port City of CALABARZON.” The two areas are home to historical landmarks, beaches, and gastronomic cuisines.

Locals and tourists basking in the splendor of the tropical paradise of Palawan can also fill up their vehicle tanks at the newly-opened Caltex stations to power a blissful escapade around the island. The three Caltex stations are situated in South Road, Brgy. Bataraza, Puerto Princesa; South Road, Poblacion, Rio Tuba, and North Road, Brgy. San Manuel, Puerto Princesa. Motorists can also opt to visit the commercial stalls around the roadside stations for refreshments. Palawan takes pride in its pristine beaches and coastlines, picturesque cave formations, and prized delicacies.

Caltex also maintains strict health protocols and offers cashless payment options to ensure safer drives for motorists and to further the country’s recovery.

Aside from its service station openings, two new Caltex Havoline autoPro workshops were also opened in Luzon and Mindanao. Motorists in Ilocos Norte needing a vehicle tune-up can make a pit stop at the newly-opened Northbound Auto Care site located at Brgy. 2, F. Julian St., Pila Road, Laoag City. Chevron named among Asia’s top employers by tandem wins

Chevron, the name behind Caltex lubricants, fuel products and filling stations, has been recognized twice as top-notch employer for 2020. Their recognition as one of the “Best Companies to Work for in Asia” for 2020 by HR Asia last December has been seconded by them receiving the “Best Employer Brand” title at the 15th Employer Branding Awards ceremony last week.

Press Statement by Chevron Holdings, Inc. (CHI), “Chevron recognized among Asia’s best employers with double wins,” 2021:

Chevron Holdings Inc. employees remain at the heart of the company’s success.

Manila, Philippines, February 19, 2021– Chevron Holdings Inc. (CHI) recently hauled two employer of choice awards from prestigious international award-giving bodies in recognition of its exemplary employment practices and workplace culture that prevail even amid unprecedented times.

CHI was named one of the ‘Best Companies to Work For in Asia 2020’ by HR Asia, Asia’s most authoritative publication for human resource (HR) professionals. The publication lauded the company for raising the bar for employee engagement and workplace excellence in the region.

“Receiving this award even in the midst of these difficult, uncertain times is immensely meaningful. It is a validation of our emphasis on employee safety and well-being, and on diversity and inclusion as the centerpieces of our culture. It inspires us to continue the Chevron Way and to be agile in responding to changing times,” CHI General Manager Steven James Callaghan said.

Out of the 150 companies shortlisted for the award, only 21 emerged as winners. The awardees were selected based on the strict judging criteria by a panel of judges and on a survey conducted among employees across Asia using the publication’s proprietary Total Engagement Assessment Model. The winners were announced during the virtual awarding ceremony held on December 31, 2020.

“We are happy to have won the ‘Best Companies to Work For in Asia 2020’ award. This merit is a testament to CHI’s responsible corporate leadership and effective people strategy that endure even amid these trying times. As we all move forward, we will continue to promote a culture where everyone thrives,” Michelle Green, Director for HR Operations at Chevron Corporation, shared.

Covering 300,000 employees across 11 markets in Asia, HR Asia’s Best Companies to Work For in Asia Awards is the largest annual program in the region that recognizes companies that foster excellent workplace culture and invest in employee development.

Aside from the HR Asia award, CHI also copped the highly coveted Global Best Employer Brand Award at the 15th Employer Branding Awards ceremony held on February 16, 2021.

The award is given by the Employer Branding Institute to companies that have utilized HR strategies in managing their employees and advancing their professional growth. The winners were assessed and judged based on the ability to translate vision into action for HR strategy, cultivation of competencies to build a future-ready organization, fostering an inclusive company culture, and ensuring effective employee engagement.

Employer Branding Institute is a virtual global organization comprised of senior HR leaders from over 36 countries, recognized for their contributions to employer branding and talent management practices.

“We are truly honored to be recognized by HR Asia and the Employer Branding Institute as one of the region’s top employers. These awards are a reflection of CHI’s long-established belief in the power of human ingenuity. We dedicate these to our employees who help make our business viable, “Callaghan added.

In the previous years, CHI bagged the Wellness Company of the Year at the Asia CEO Forum in 2018 for its notable health and productivity programs for its employees. In 2019, CHI was also recognized by the same award-giving body as one of the Circle of Excellence awardees of the Kalibrr Top Employer of the Year Award.

Composed of nearly 1,600 employees, CHI offers its employees development opportunities on top of its competitive compensation and benefits. Upholding its operational tenet “Do it safely or not at all,” CHI ensures the health and safety of its employees and communities where it operates through opening a company clinic and providing full-scale training programs for office safety and wellness programs for its employees. It also offers volunteering opportunities and programs promoting diversity and inclusion.

In response to the health crisis, CHI immediately shifted to work-from-home arrangements. Financial assistance and health consultations are also continuously provided to help them pull through the pandemic.

To also propel the country’s recovery, CHI, together with Chevron Philippines Inc., donated funds to the Philippine General Hospital Medical Foundation Inc. last year to provide medical supplies for healthcare workers. Last December, CHI also donated funds to help rehabilitate the communities affected by Typhoons Rolly and Ulysses.

November and December’s 11 new Caltex stations bring 2020’s total to 30 new stations, set stage for 2021 growth

Chevron Philippines opened 30 new Caltex filling stations last year, finishing with 11 stations spread out through Luzon, the Visayas and Mindano in the last two months of 2020. These openings bring the Caltex network to almost 650 filling stations nationwide, stations they expect to keep adding to this year.

Press Statement by Chevron Philippines, Inc. (CPI), “Caltex surges with 11 new stations in last two months to start strong in 2021,” 2021:

Manila, Philippines–Clean and high-quality fuels are now made available in more provinces as Caltex, marketed by Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), recently opened new service stations in Pampanga, Pangasinan, Bataan, Batangas, Cebu, and Bukidnon in support of the reopening of the economy. This brings the total number of newly-opened Caltex stations in 2020 to 30.

Caltex presently has a growing retail structure composed of nearly 650 retail stations across the archipelago, a figure that is expected to climb as Caltex opens more stations this year. This is a testament to the success of its retailer-owned retailer-operated business model.

CPI recently opened a Caltex service station in the municipality of Guagua, Pampanga. Situated along the Jose Abad Santos Avenue, Barangay San Antonio, this 12-pump fueling station is now ready to supply fuel for motorists traveling in the area and to support the transport of forestry and fishery resources, such as rice, corn, and tilapia, which are staples in the province.

Another Caltex service station stands in the highly urbanized Olongapo City. Located along the busy stretch of Rizal Avenue, this service station now serves the fuel needs of residents in Barangay West Bajac-Bajac and its neighboring districts.

The newly-established service station in Barangay Culis, Hermosa, Bataan also serves as a vital pit stop for private and commercial vehicles traversing the Roman Highway, which is a national arterial road that straddles 10 Bataan towns.

A new 18-pump Caltex fueling site also opened in Inosluban, Lipa City, Batangas and is now ready to cater to its residents and tourists. Aside from being once known as the coffee center of the world, Lipa City is also dubbed as the “Little Rome of the Philippines” for being home to many Catholic churches.

In Visayas, another Caltex station rose in San Fernando, a coastal municipality of Cebu. The area is part of Metro Cebu, which encompasses the largest domestic port in the Philippines. The fuel station’s presence in the area provides a reliable source of power for the engines of shipping and logistics vehicles operating around Metro Cebu.

Down south, two Caltex stations opened along the National Highway in Bukidnon, ensuring an uninterrupted journey for motorists in the area. The stations are located in the landlocked areas of Barangay Aglayan, Malaybalay City and Barangay Kisolon, Sumilao. Bukidnon is regarded as the “Food Basket of Mindanao” as it is a major producer of rice, corn, and sugarcane.

All Caltex stations carry the premium Euro 4 compliant fuel Caltex with Techron, which guarantees maximized vehicle performance, enhanced engine protection, and lower emissions. Aside from providing clean and quality fuels, Caltex also maintains strict safety protocols and offer contactless payment methods for safer travels.

“To match the Filipinos’ increasing demand for better fuel, while catering to key industries that are gradually reopening, we seek to sustain the upward trend of our retail network growth this year and onwards. We are constantly expanding our brick-and-mortar network to power a worthwhile journey for our customers wherever they are,” said CPI Country Chairman and General Manager Billy Liu.

The opening of more Caltex stations will help the local fuel industry meet the increasing demand stiffened by the country’s improving economy. According to the Asian Development Outlook 2020 Update, the Philippines’ Gross Domestic Product is forecast to grow by 6.5% in 2021.1

Caltex’s launch of new service stations and quality fuel products, partnerships, and latest promotions allow it to kick-start 2021 stronger and more equipped to serve the country’s fuel needs.

Caltex Havoline motorcycle engine oil line-up reintroduced with improved C.O.R.E.+ formulation for city traffic conditions

Chevron Philippines has reintroduced their motorcycle engine oil line-up with C.O.R.E.+ Technology, an improvement over the C.O.R.E. tech they had initially introduced here in 2017.

Fully synthetic, semi-synthetic and conventional mineral Caltex Havoline Super 4T for motorcycles and Havoline Supermatic 4T for scooters now come with the improved C.O.R.E.+ formulation that they assert to deliver better performance and cleaning properties suitable for punishing city traffic conditions.

The “E” in C.O.R.E.+ stands for Enhanced acceleration that’s achieved on Super 4T lubricants for manual transmission motorcycles with their proprietary ZoomTech additive which keeps gearboxes cooler and improves clutch grip under heavy loads and in hot climates.

With their extensive line-up of motorcycle engine lubricants, Chevron appears to be gearing up for the expanding role of two-wheelers on the nation’s transport grid, particularly now under quarantine conditions which cut back on public transport capacities.

Press Statement by Chevron Philippines, Inc. (CPI), “Caltex Havoline® new motorcycle products raise the bar for even better overall performance,” 2020:

Enjoy increased reliability and engine efficiency with Havoline’s proprietary C.O.R.E.+ Technology and ZOOMTECH

Manila, Philippines–Caltex Havoline, marketed by Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), today unveiled a new generation of four-stroke motorcycle and scooter engine oils that maximizes engine performance and delivers smooth engine operation on all road conditions. The new product line for motorcycles and scooters includes fully synthetic, semi-synthetic and mineral products formulated with Havoline’s signature C.O.R.E.+ Technology, and ZOOMTECH.

All Havoline Super 4T and SuperMatic 4T four-stroke motorcycle and scooter engine oils now come with the upgraded C.O.R.E.+ Technology, Caltex’s most advanced and best-performing formulation. C.O.R.E.+ Technology is an improvement over the previous C.O.R.E. Technology and further addresses key concerns especially in stressful city traffic conditions. These engine oils deliver a more enjoyable riding experience with enhanced engine performance and cleaning properties.

Apart from an upgrade in product technology, the entire Havoline Super 4T and SuperMatic 4T range also meets American Petroleum Institute (API) SN , one of the latest specifications in the industry. Previously, Havoline Super 4T semi-synthetic and mineral products were only meeting API SL  specifications. Now, meeting API SN specifications ensures that all Havoline Super 4T and SuperMatic 4T fully synthetic, semi-synthetic and mineral engine oils offer increased high temperature deposits protection for pistons, better wear control, and improved sludge control in urban, stop-and-go riding conditions. Most motorcycle and scooter engine oil brands in the region are only offering a mix of API SJ , SL and SN products.

In a time of a global pandemic, along with keeping one’s health in check, vehicles used for work need to also be in constant tiptop shape. With many motorcyclists using their two-wheelers for urban commuting in their line of work, it is important that Caltex Havoline tailors an engine oil that would be strong enough to stand up to the challenging conditions faced on a daily basis. These include a lack of acceleration when carrying heavy loads and high engine temperatures while stuck in traffic. Reliability is also a key concern, as downtime and money spent on repairs are unnecessary inconveniences.

“Today’s consumers are more discerning with the engine oils they choose, and most demand for better protection and performance of the engine, clutch and gearbox,” said Area Business Manager of Chevron Lubricants for Philippines Hafiz Nasar. “The newest generation of motorcycle engine oils spurs from our success of the previous Havoline motorcycle range and raises the bar for product performance across the industry. We constantly improve and evolve our products to meet the latest industry’s standards, while also keeping abreast of the lubrication requirements of vehicle manufacturers as their engine technology advances.”

Asia-Pacific accounts for 83% of the global two-wheel population, or 524.2 million units in absolute numbers (figures from “Kline Lubricants for Motorcycles, Scooters, and Mopeds. 2017: Global Market Analysis and Opportunities”). This number is only set to grow, fueled by rising urbanization in growing economies of the APAC region and increasing demand for transport in small cities. In 2019, the two-wheeler market in the Philippines hit the 8th all-time record in a row and 5th largest in the world. While the 2020 outlook isn’t good, the industry is expected to have a fast recovery next year.

C.O.R.E.+ Technology

      • Cleans and protects – Maintains efficient engine performance
      • Oxidation stability – Protects against oil degradation
      • Reduces engine heat damage – Delivers continuous and superior oil stability
      • Enhances acceleration – Improves clutch grip under high loads with ZOOMTECH

In addition, these engine oils (except SuperMatic 4T and Ezy 4T) are also formulated with ZOOMTECH, which delivers better oil frictional properties. For the everyday rider, this improves clutch grip and prevents slippage, especially under high load conditions, and ensures maximum power transfer for enhanced acceleration.

Lastly, the entire range of Havoline Super 4T and SuperMatic 4T engine oils now meet API SN performance specifications, which delivers benefits including:

      • High temperature piston deposit protection
      • Improved robustness in wear control
      • Enhanced oxidation thickening for better lubrication of the engine
      • Sludge control properties, especially in urban, stop-go conditions

The previously well-received Ride Strong campaign takes on a refreshing new look this year, with a more dynamic set of visuals that covers print, digital and OOH applications. Product labels and cartons have also been redesigned for better legibility.

Caltex range of products for motorcycles and scooters also include:

      • Caltex Havoline Ezy 4T SAE 20W-40 API SG JASO MA2
      • Caltex Havoline Scooter Gear Oil SAE 80W-90 API GL-5
      • Techron® Concentrate Plus – Motorcycle
      • Caltex Brake and Clutch Fluid DOT 3
      • Caltex Havoline Xtended Life Coolant (Premixed)
